Police have frozen $34 million of assets linked to a well known Auckland-based restaurant chain....

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&o…

Yes, some people have made many speculations as to which this "well-known, Auckland-based restaurant" is on other forums, and Yes, speculation can damage the reputation of law-abiding and legal chains in NZ, but I still gotta ask :) ……….. since some of you ChoiceCheapies lot are so dang knowledgeable :)

    • Yeah i red-it, and had a ROFL moment when someone mentioned DSE??? …..clearly that person needs a visit to specsavers hehe

I know its bad, but just started the topic to "speculate" some more I guess. I noticed a "popular chicken joint" has closed in the Botany Downs Food court (and Lincoln Rd has closed as well), but other branches seem to be business as usual. So who knows really at this point in time….

I must say, this is probably the best guess so far, on the right plate. Only one of those companies fits the bill. They have to pick-cup the tab somehow.

    • But which director(s) is being grilled by the police or immigration at the moment?

No idea, but I'd imagine they'd be a bit hot under the collar!

  • It's Hollywood bakery

    • this is speculation btw

    • Never heard of them…

      • Auckland Bakery / Cafe chain, apparently 46 stores. Source: http://hollywoodbakery.co.nz/about-hollywood-bakery/

        • …well known Auckland-based restaurant chain…

        • @footy7:

Not going to get involved in speculating, but that could just simply be the way the information was provided, it may be a generalisation.

        • @footy7:

I don't really have much interest in guessing who. Was just explaining what they did.

  • Let's just be careful in naming places without confirmation, wouldn't want companies to be linked to this unfairly, as it may be damaging to them.

    • hmm…. yeah I did mention about this in my original post. Did not mean to offend any one or any legal business. Perhaps deleting this post?

But… if the authorities releases this public press statement in that kind of way, people are gonna speculate anyway. And since its the holiday season, and plenty of people will be out and about having meals and takeaways, it will cross their mind when they are buying food… "Dang, is this the restaurant chain in question??"

      • if the authorities releases this public press statement in that kind of way, people are gonna speculate anyway.

Yea, definitely, the way they have done it is bound to cause it.

Don't have a problem with speculation or discussion in general, but just need to stray away from focusing on one particular store before anything is released.

        • True dat, don't focus on one.

In that case, I speculate its Oporto….

        • @footy7:

          Lol

    • no problem there. the terrible food will be keeping people away from hollywood bakeries.

  • I know of several restaurants in Christchurch and wellington that commit immigration based crimes. Basically they help arrange a working visa and a job for someone from Asia. The worker pays a large fee $30,000. Then the worker has to pay the restaurant an hourly rate to work (to cover their wages/taxes) Eventually they can apply for PR. They are unwilling to complain because they are worried about being kicked out of nz. These businesses make a lot of money from the free labour and "fees".

  • Just trolling through the forums now, just to update anyone like me who is curious who and missed it from the news, it was Masala. [News Talk ZB}(http://www.newstalkzb.co.nz/news/national/masala-restaurants…)

According to Immigration New Zealand one of her victims worked 66 hour weeks for months at the Takapuna restaurant and was also told to clean Joti Jain's house - all for no more than $3 an hour.

      Screw that. Scum.
