JBL Charge 5 Wi-Fi & Bluetooth Portable Speaker (Black) $248 (Was $369.99) + Shipping ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ JB HI-FI

Bit of a niche one this, as unless you specifically want the WiFi-enabled features then this makes no sense over the standard Charge 5. According to PriceSpy this hasn't been discounted before, so I picked one up today

So far Chromecast is working well, though I've run in to a weird issue using PlexAmp that I'll have to troubleshoot. Spotify Connect works and I presume the other things like AirPlay also do. Sounds pretty bloody good too.

  • Not sure why speakers need WiFi tbh

Don't have one but I'm guessing if it's wifi enabled it can play Spotify independent of the phone. Ie. You can use phone to control Spotify but the music is being played directly on the device.

It’s a peculiar case where your (home) WiFi is near the speaker but you are outside the Bluetooth range and still wish to play/hear the music!
That’s the only use case I can see. Very niche.

          • Battery on your phone runs out.

          • Phone call on phone doesn't interrupt music?

          • Perhaps "potential" better quality for music apps that support lossless formats (Bluetooth codecs generally are lossy compression). However we are talking about a $250 speaker not a $5k system.

Not niche at all. If you're casting from youtube/spotify etc. not all your phones audio is going through the speaker. No interruptions from notifications and phone call sound coming through the speaker. Of if you're like me, accidentality opening a GIF or video with sound on my phone browser interrupting the music.

Also other people on your network can cast to it without having to pair bluetooth to each device first.

  • Sweet as, time to play Vengaboys at the beach
