This kind of deal has been posted before, basically you make a $50 donation to Child Cancer Foundation and you can choose to receive a LEGO Owl (40497). It looks like there is also a LEGO Brickheadz Poodle as an option as well.

From the Instagram post:

WHO wants a special Halloween Owl LEGO® set? 🎃

Doesn't look like we can unfortunately:

Donations for LEGO® sets will not qualify for tax credits.

So what you are saying is if Party 1 "donate" 1.6 million to party 2 and then party 2 "gives" party 1 a house then party 1 can't claim tax credit on his "donation".
That's crazy. It's almost as if IRD is preventing a loophole.

I believe the reason is that if you receive anything in return it is not viewed as a donation as such. I have been involved with charities and there is a complexity around the rules for donations. A good portion of accountants don't fully understand charities accounts either.

          • @HighvoltageRuss: Maybe your are buying the Lego for $50 from Lego. Then Lego donate $50 to the charity. Lego can recoup 28% of that donation. That's what i would do if i was the Lego company and it was allowed.

@HighvoltageRuss: Correct. It's not a donation if you receive something in return.
and 100% Lego will be counting the stock in their expense account.

Frankly I don't feel this post should exist on this platform at all. It's not a cheapies deal. People just sympathy up vote this because it's "kids" and "cancer". I got no problem with "kids" or "cancer" but vs $3xx flights to China and $2.5 Knives. These "deals" don't belong on the same platform.

      • The accountant in me commented before reading the entire post 🤦‍♀️ how disappointing
