AMEX Membership Rewards redemption rate

Just bought a phone (using 'hacks' on this site from Samsung), paid with AMEX (platinum edge).

While waiting for confirmation I get a pop-up asking if I want to use MR to pay at a rate of 1000pts = $6.25. Sweet I thought, normal rate since having this card (2018) has been 1000pts = $5.00, so 'must be something to do with Samsung' as I had cashed in points 2 months ago @ $5.00.

Went to the MR store and the few random things I looked at were at the $6.25 rate.

So the question is, is this a promotion or is it the new redemption rate?
Haven't heard anything about it, used to get notification of a promo ($7.50) pre-covid. Not complaining, just puzzled…

  • noticed this as well but I primarily use my MR for airpoints 1000pts = $6.66 so didn't bite, there was another transaction where they offered a higher rate, a restaurant payment so interested to see other comments though

you'll get enhanced rates dining with their partnered restaurants otherwise its 16000 per $100 for the partnered shops and 1000 points for $5 on their standard ones iirc. I guess the retail list hasnt been updated in while. I did see the same rate when they had the spend $500 and get $50 back with samsung a few months ago. Sony might be the same?

  • Ahh, SafeKey eh. Thanks for that Nzfade

  • can you share what hacks you are referring to? thanks

    • Buying direct from Samsung, EPPs, stacking codes, trade-in bonuses…

  • When used for dining, 1000 MR = $7.50 value. Coincidentally, this is the same rate when using MR for Amex Travel.

Based on direct redeeming of MR, 1000 MR to $7.50 is the best I can find.

To be fair, I haven't analysed the value of MR to $ value for every single partner (https://global.americanexpress.com/rewards/transfer) but it's unlikely to be better than Amex Travel (surely).
