Hard Drive Purchasing Advice

Looking for advice on cheap and large hard drive for storage from reliable source.

I'm wanting something big (>16 TB) but am unsure where to purchase this from (and possibly when).

I'm hoping to get at the best price point ($/TB). Current leads seem a little expensive, and NZ price seems a lot higher than online).

Thanks in advance ^^

Have a look at old discussion here. It covers pretty much.

      1. East digital mentioned below are great. They also sell on ebay I think. Probably the best packaging for hdd
      2. bh photo (US) - Previous deal. Got 1 and it's great. packaging was good as well.
      3. Amazon. Can get some good deals sometimes, but be careful on the packaging front. Few complaints but no brainer if deal is good. Amazon service is good mostly. I have bought 12tb ironwolf few years back. There is not much protection in the box when it came so bit risky.

If buying from US. Black friday/cyber monday there are possibilities of the deal. Also, look over www.slickdeals.net (it's similar to cheapies for US)

      • Has the pricing changed since last year (when I last bought) in terms of how much we should be roughly paying per TB? Am looking at getting another 16tb to 18tb external drive again this BF Sales.

        • All storage prices have gone up a bit. Haven't been following much on the prices, but if you find something very close to last year's pricing I would say that would be a good deal.

These guys pop up on ozbargain a lot and I've used them and can confirm they're reliable. Hard drives are shipped really well in tightly packed foam.

Used this guy twice, first time all 3x 16TB drives were I bought were DOA (damaged in transit), he provided a return label and later sent out replacements, can't complain, genuine dude.
Second time went great, well packaged.

    • Would also recommend. The two 14tb refurbished drives I've got have been on 24/7 with 0 issues.

    • How confident is everyone that the drives they list as new are actually new?

    Ordered one of these https://east-digital.myshopify.com/products/mg08aca16te-tosh…
    NZ$253 MG08ACA16TE Toshiba 16TB 512MB 7200RPM 6Gb/s 3.5 SATA Internal Hard Drive
Will be using it as a backup drive, so don't need any performance. And since it's just a backup reliability isn't super important.

I've not used them yet but I'd confidently used East Digital after seeing years of positive feedback. I have used Server Part Deals in the past and had a great experience; really fast shipping and really, really well packaged.

  • Cool thanks for the leads @ABCDEFG @RockCartel @tombanks @0mfgroflmao @Wakrak @ace310

    Lots of good options

I can vouch for eastern digital I just got sent a 12tb exos for around $255nzd. It came yesterday within in 2 weeks really well packaged with foam. Drive was brand new and tested in my system haha really happy

I've purchased 4x 18TB Seagate Exos in two batches from East Digital for my Synology. They were the brand new units, not refurbs or pulls.
I run them in BTRFS with 50TB of usable storage. Drives were checked with CrystalDiskInfo before Raid configuration/setup and shows 0 hours and no issues.
If I remember, BTRFS setup took around 64 hours to optimize the drives.

Drives arrived in a couple of weeks without issue after ordering. I was provided tracking details with the purchase.
Drives were shipped in anti-static bags and in shipping foam holders inside the box.

Along with their 3 year return to base warranty, I won't consider buying from NZ retailers again as the price is compelling and the warranty sufficient for my needs relative to the cost.

Just my experience and I'll buy from them again without hesitation. I recommend them to my friends as well :)

I brought 2x 12TB WD for my NAS last year from B&H. 2x were cheaper than 1 local even with local sales and shipping. They arrived really well packaged and only took 6 days. Will use them again.
