Credit Card Refunds on International Purchase

Recently I used my ANZ credit card to make an international purchase worth about NZD455 but it was refund on the same day (processed 2 days later by the bank?) and only NZD444 returned. about $11 or 2.5%? difference?

Call ANZ and they aid its due to exchange rate but couldn't tell me it was taken by Visa or ANZ. They kindly offer one-off goodwill.

I typically would use Amex and they are pretty good at refunding the full charged amount.

What's everyone experience?

  • I've had ANZ refunded international purchase due to fraudulent transaction and the same experience like you.

First the refunded amount was less due to FX difference at transaction and the FX fee. I argued with them as this was fraudulent and was significant ($400-ish) so managed to get the whole amount.

Similar happened to me, someone bought $3000 worth of flights from Abu Dhabi or something. In my case though, the exchange rate was favourable and I made $100

  • use wise (or revolut) in future, to help a little bit with the better exchange rate. got hit with this on paypal.

not only is a poor exchange rate you get this issue too!

  • I had same experience with Amex too. So it really depends on the rate at the time of the purchase and refund.

Don't think ANZ or Visa took your $11 it's just the exchange rate.
