Creating a Website

A Family member has approached me and was asking me about creating a website to advertise a simple website for his small business. He only needs a very basic website just with a home page with contact details and a gallery he can put some photos of previous work(Aeroplane Spraypainter). Any advice where to start. Can this be done cheaply. Any advice would be great

  • The easiest option would be Squarespace or GoDaddy, which have extremely easy to use website builder tools - it's about as simple as Microsoft Word. They charge about NZD300 per year. If you want a website name like www.theguywhodoesstuff.co.nz then you'll need to register that at a place like 1stDomains and pay about $40 per year to renew it.

    • Please don't use 1st domains, go with something like Metaname

      • What’s wrong with first domains ?

Just bought a domain with only domains

        • Rather subpar support. At least it isn't Crazy Domains!

  • It’s a little bit of money but I would recommend Squarespace at $38/month.

  • Website builders like wix or squarespace are the way to go if you're not a technical person.

You can go even cheaper by hosting your site in a free service like netlify. All you need is to pay for the domain.

  • +1

I’ll do it for 200$. Just buy the domain. 20$ per year for my hosting.

    • How can i contact you. Have you got a website

  • Piggybacking on this thread to see if someone can recommend a cheap option for hosting a small website selling a few low volume items per month. Shopify looks nice and easy but it quite expensive @ $29 USD/month if you don't expect to sell much.

    • WordPress with hostkoala is pretty ok but not as easy as Shopify lol. I use porkbun for the domains. Been using that combo for over 4yrs now ;)

    • It is not really expensive, you need to consider the time and cost associated with maintaining other platforms and keeping them secure, Shopify just does this easily.
If you are not web savvy, a WooCommerce or Magento site is probably not going to work for you - if you have to pay someone to help you make changes of 5-10 hours a year (minimum), then there will be no real cost benefit.

You also need to consider if you need a eCommerce SSL, etc, if using Woocommerce.

    • Depends on what you're selling. There are other services specific to certain niches but you're not going to be able to use them for everything.

If you're just selling trinkets/crafts and it's not making a full income, consider etsy

  • For domains and NZ hosting I recommend MyHost.

MyHost has a very basic website builder you could try, otherwise you can just install Wordpress and buy an appropriate professional looking theme.

  • If you are technically inclined you can create and host a website on github or cloudflare for free.

Note: a custom domain name you can purchase off the cheapest cloudflare (technical) or anyone else.

My github blog has some instructions https://dvkwong.com/coding/Create-a-blog-in-10-minutes/#crea…

    • Yeah I have my personal website hosted via Github pages but my business website I ended up going with Wordpress + Elementor. I think depending on what you want, esp for some certain types businesses Github Pages isn't what you want
