Patio Cover options

Hello fellow cheapies,we just bought our first home and looking to install a patio cover so we can use the outdoor space a bit more to host some friends and family. Any ideas on what are some of the affordable options to cover the outdoor area?

So far I have seen below two but keen to hear other experiences or any recommendations. Looking for something that isn't too expensive but also something that may last a reasonable period of time.

I am based in Auckland. Thank you

No experience with those ones. They might be flimsy for high wind areas, so check you are sheltered area. 100kmh wind rating is not too bad though so would be fine in sheltered area of that's true.

The first one is twin wall panels so you can view twin wall panels at Bunnings or m10 to check you are happy with those type of panels. The second one doesn't say.

Container door, living culture, trade tested are other options for you to explore.

We did wood frame pergola with polycarbonate roof with metal flashings and panels interdigitated, but that costs a lot more (bc high wind and wanted a specific size).

    • Thanks that's really good info. I will check out the other places that you have recommended as well.

We're weighing up the same thing at the moment qs we cant sit iutside and its too windy for the cantilever umbrella we have.

Biggest issue we are finding is understanding how to mount it and the roof line of our house. Placement of it means we can't have a post on the side by the back door as it will be right in front of the door, pushing it further down the patio might look a bit odd going outside then back under the cover. The freestanding ones also tend tk be too high at the house side to fit.

Seen a few near us that have L shaped brackets from the soffit up to the cover that is something i think we'd like but generally that ends up being a custom fit which pushes up the price.

Options we've looked at are mitre 10, bunnings, tsb, trade tested, trade depot and generally anything else that comes up when you google pergola. I'm not sure i trust someone like tsb to spend thousands on there, their furniture has been ok but never great, at that level of spend youre getting in to being worth spending a bit more to make sure it lasts. Currently the favoured kption ks the $3500 nouveou ine at mitre 10 but we'd need to customise it tonuse L brackets from the house.

I bought the 4.8m patio cover from Tradetested. Used Kiwiwallet for Cashback. Got about $98 back. On delivery, the box with the aluminum posts had a couple of dents on it. The box with the polycarbonate sheets was in good shape. So they send a new box and never collected the old box back. They apologized and offered to pay me for getting rid of it, but I gave it off to a handyman for his self install using a new set of polycarbonate sheets. TT issued a 10% reimbursement for service recovery.

Got an advertised handyman to install it. He didn't do a good job, so had to do some DIY work too on it. Overall, happy with the product. Had held up well one AKL winter and summer. Looking to add some (solar) strip lighting.

    • Thanks for the info, if you don't mind me asking what was the cost to install from the handyman ? Did you get couple of quotes? So far I have had a large range, anywhere between $500 - $3500 to install.

My quote was from the installer was for $700 + GST in Auckland. He was referred to me by a friend but didn't do a good job. So needed another handyman person and $150 to tidy up and attach aluminium tape etc to prevent water going in through the area between my house's cladding and the part that attaches to it. I didn't feel like going back to the installer and arguing about it. My recommendation will be to get a quote from Kitset Assembly guys if they work in your town. I got a fairly similar quote from them and feel that there is less chance of getting a cowboy.

I was really impressed and almost used them for my pergola. Should handle high winds and have a glass look, can get Marley spouting attachments, I've linked the kitset ones to give you an idea on pricing but they also do custom sizes.
