How Has Everyone's Experience Been with TWH in-Store Price Matching When The Deal Isn't Local?

I’ve definitely had a less-than-smooth experience, even though their price match policy doesn’t explicitly prohibit this. On several occasions, I’ve been declined initially and had to argue about the policy.

For example, I recently went to price match an item that was cheaper at PnS in another city. The staff member was very reluctant, even after reading the policy terms. He kept questioning how I could get the product delivered if it wasn’t local and gave me a lot of excuses. Eventually, he agreed to honor the price match “as a one-off,” but emphasised that next time it must be for a product sold locally.

I’m wondering if the Cheapies community has any tips to make this process smoother?

i find just saying in a loud voice "do you know who you are talking too?!" works really well, then followed by "i'm a Cheapie! that's who!"
But in all seriousness, if it's not in terms and conditions then you can only politely point this out, sadly many places, (im looking at you Briscoes/Mitre10), say they will pricematch or pricebeat but they really don't want to. I find it ironic that Mitre10 will have a 10 foot sign on the store front saying so but the reality can be quite the opposite.

I don't bother arguing if that happens - life is too short :-)

There is nothing forcing any private party to have to deal with any other party - it's a free country, and I can choose to go elsewhere too.

You might be able to try another representative / different location if that is feasible.

  • Generally if I get someone who isn't very familiar with a policy but is digging their heels in and it looks like it won't go my way, I say "I'm happy to escalate to a manager if there's one around."

  • tbh arguing with folks instore is not something I want to bother with

  • I feel like theyre making it harder and harder. Used to price match with grocery stuff online easy as, now have to do it in store, and also have had a manager say no because apparently they called the paknsave and it was on clearance. Not according to the website but yeah not worth arguing, just left it.

  • agree! its getting harder & harder!

  • I had this problem a while ago, I argued where on their T&C’s it stated it must be local, just says a NZ retailer. They agreed same thing with ‘once off’…

  • I don’t price match often with the warehouse but haven’t had any issues when I do it. Mitre 10 are the ones I’ve had issues with but it really seems to depend who you are dealing with in store/what store it is.

It was disappointing when the warehouse got rid of the ability to price match online (also the 10% off)
Im guessing with the economy getting worse they don’t have the same margin as before so are more hesitant to price match/beat especially if it ends up below cost.

  • People like me are probably reluctant to reply, but yeah, so far so good for me, even if it's not a local deal. I hope I don't give them another excuse to make it harder…haha
