I have the 8 port version of this switch and see that it and the 4 port version are on sale at lowest ever price. Reliable little non POE non managed 2.5 gig switch with 10 gig uplinks.

Metal case and runs cool.

One commenter says they can run off 5 volts to save even more power but I have not tried.

1 * 10 gig uplink ports on 8 port version and 2 on 4 port.

Will come with UK or US power adapter but uses standard 12 volt adapter with barrel jack or you could use plug adapter

US $20.57 / $34.30 before GST

  • Wow, great find and exactly what I need. I have a 2.5Gb OPNSense router shuffled off to a 10Gb SFP+ switch adapted out to 1Gb RJ45, which then pushes off to a 1Gb switch. So I'm running just 10 and 1, this will give me all three.

Admittedly my true wish is hindsight and that I got a router with SFP+ or 10GbE, but too late for that.

    • Glad I did when I bought my house last year.

      I went with the following:

      MikroTik RB5009UG+S+IN router 1x 2.5GbE 1x SFP+
      MikroTik CRS309-1G-8S+IN 8 port SFP+ switch
      Grandstream GWN7701M 8 port 2.5 GbE switch 1x SFP+

      • Have you tried OPNSense/PFSense? And if you have, how do you find it compares against the MikroTik OS?

        • Only in a limited capacity in a previous role.

I quite like RouterOS though and the advantage of it coming on awesome/cheap hardware is mint too.

  • +1

These work well I have found with DAC cables and simple optic SFP+s, but a a couple of RJ45 10 gig SFP+ modules was too much for it to run and it would just sit there powercycling. Perhaps with more expensive more efficiant ones it would be able to power them up ok.

Also the stock US plug brick has died on all 3 of mine. No idea if the EU or UK plug ones have better guts, but I don't like those plugs so always go for the US ones on things. I ended up spending about the same on a decent 12v meanwell brick from element 14 to power them.

Not needing long term performance out of mine, they just have to last me till the unifi 2.5 switches are generally available and not limited supply.

    • Oh yeah I'd immediately replace the plug, they're usually just 5.5x2.5 centre positive barrel jacks at 12V, so should be dime a dozen to replace. Generic routers from all the ISPs have 12V 1-2A ones that will fit, and my WD Elements HDD with USB out ports came with a 12V 3A one, so possible it doesn't have enough current to run multiple SFP+ and needs a boost.

Pretty sure I have some 12V 10A adapters hanging around too…

In any case, as long as it has the same or more current, most people will probably have compatible adapters lying around.

      • Note that most ISP routers (as well as those older switches and non ISP routers I have experience with) are 5.5mm x 2.1mm from my experience so you won't be able to use their PSUs without an adapter, if this really needs 5.5mm x 2.5mm. External HDs do generally use 5.5mm x 2.5mm.

I mean I haven't carefully measured but at least whenever I've tried for many years I've never able to use a router etc PSUs with my external HDs. But am able to use my external HD adapters with my routers without an adapter (some may debate if it's a good idea).

And a quick search suggested these were the norms for such devices hence why it was like that. And further a 5.5mm x 2.1mm to 5.5mm x 2.5mm adapter worked with the various router PSUs (2 or 3) I've tested so I can use them on my HDs.

You can get a pack of 5x 5.5mm x 2.1mm to 5.5mm x 2.5mm adapter for under NZ$3 delivered with other Choice stuff (the US$10 minimum) from AliExpress so it's not really an issue either way. Possibly you can get them on the bundle deals/buy 3 as well as an alternative. (Note I cannot remember if this is the correct convention for adapters and in any case AliExpress sellers can be a bit random, so check if you're getting the correct direction before you buy if you're only getting one direction. You want something which has a 5.5mm x 2.1 mm socket/jack/receptacle/"female" and a 5.5mm x 2.5mm plug/"male" if you're planning to use a 5.5mm x 2.1mm PSU on a 5.5mm x 2.5mm device.)

(I'm guessing people are much more likely to have spare router PSUs than HD ones especially on Cheapies with Amazon US etc tending to have significant better prices for external HDs and since Seagate have AFAIK abandoned their multi country PSU. Still if you did want to use a HD adapter on a 5.5mm x 2.1mm device might be worth getting the reverse especially if it's a high current draw one even if it seems to work.)

      • If I didn't use SFP+, would a 12v 1-2A be sufficient?

        • Is it going to use less than 12/24W?

It's like asking "if I only drive to work, will $10 in petrol get me there and back?"

Could always just try it if your power adapter is a spare with no other purpose, the wattage is low enough that the worst case scenario is that you'll kill the power adapter. Over current [by the device] kills power source, over voltage [from the power source] kills device.

So power supply requires same voltage, same or more current than needed as the device (ignoring connectors, polarity, AC/DC etc).

          • @danvelopment: @kiwipaul - What did your one come with?

            • +1

@techhit: As an update of sorts, it came with a 12V 1A power adapter (Hong Kong plug) which I'll be swapping out for one I have lying around of the same.

              • @danvelopment: Yeah I got one too thanks. Seems fussy with input current as I can't get my 12v 2a adapters working with it

                • @techhit:

Can't see how the power adapter being capable of supplying 2A would matter - the unit would draw what it requires (presumably less than 1A), and the adapter will supply that, at the required 12V?

        • I have not measured the consumption, but even on a 12v 3A meanwell brick it would not power the 100 metre 10 gbaseT modules I got. I have some 30m ones on the way to try. One of them on its own was fine and the switches worked as expected. I probably should order a long DAC cable but those get pricy.

    • 10G SFP+ RJ45 use significantly more power than their optical counterparts. They also a mini space heater and can cause issues if not given adequate cooling

  • I have been rocking this KeepLink 8-Port 2.5Gbps Ethernet Switch with 1-Port 10G SFP+ Uplink(aliexpress.com) since last year and it's great. Thermals are great as well and it does come with NZ plug/adapter.

  • These are unmanaged switches right?

    • Yes

    • There are managed ones for not much more, it seems to be the same hardware but as mine are all now in use I am not going to open them to compare insides till I change them out for unifi ones.

Duplicate mac addresses on the 2 of them, but I found a page with a hidden URL to change them linked in a youtube review of a same looking cheap switch (may have been the serve the home one) and I just made up something.

  • Perfect timing as I was just looking at buying at 8 port 2.5gb switch yesterday. Didn't realise they had come down so drastically in price compared to 1-2 years ago.

  • +1

Always worth noting that the "sales" on Ali are almost never any decent. You can see that the price isn't much cheaper than it usually is https://www.pricearchive.org/aliexpress.com/item/10050068339…

  • OP here. Based on reviews I have read all these small routers have the same / very similar hardware and you can even flash the firmware from similar units.

I read this somewhere on servethehome.com (perhaps in this thread - https://forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/new-versio…)

NB, I have ordered one with the UK adapter cos its 240 volts but I expect that its the same adapter as the US one with a different plug. I have a couple of spare 12 volt adapters anyway.

  • I bought the 8 port in a rush near the end of the month (had some shopping credit expiring) but find now that I'm looking I probably made a mistake. The US plug version of the K0802WS is currently at least only about US$1 more than what I paid. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007513652026.html?source… The K0802WS seems to be quite similar to this deal which is the K0801WS except it has 2x SFP+ uplink ports.

The EUR and UK are a few $ more but assume most are using their own PSU so doesn't matter. Per @itakestime 's post, you probably only want to use one of them with a 10G SFP+ RJ45 at most. And if you don't need more than one or even one, it's probably moot.

Note that per reviews, back in November at least they were sometimes sending boxes which said K0802WS but had the K0801WS inside. Still I expect you can at least ask for a few dollars back or probably even receive two switches depending on how hard you push. However a caveat if the 2 uplink ports matter to you. It doesn't seem to be everyone who was receiving the K0801WS though even for the US plug model, and it's only a small number of reviews so expect it might not have been that common.

My link also has the K0502WS which is a 5+2 switch but the price isn't very good compared to the K0402WS at least at current prices. Unless you're absolutely sure you'll only ever want exactly 5 and no more 2.5GbE ports you're better of just spending the small amount more and getting the K0802WS, and if 4 is enough just go with the K0402WS. No idea what prices were like in the past like when I bought it. I find AliExpress price tracking sites not very useful anymore especially with limited deals (561) , super deals (562) and the like. The K0801WS has gone up slightly so now exactly the same price so it's possible it was always the same although it's also possible there wasn't such a good deal then.

BTW the deal title has an error it's flipped the SFP+ count for the 4 and 8 port.

    • Actually I was remembering the historic prices a bit wrong. So current price of the US plug K0802WS (and K0801WS) is about US$4 more than the EUR plug K0801WS when I was looking. (US plug was very very slightly cheaper but out of stock). I'd probably still buy it at that price but if you're fairly sure you won't want more than 1 uplink port definitely not worth it. However with current prices being the same I wonder if it was the same in the past when I was buying, who knows?

Forgot to mention besides limited deals etc, another problem with price tracking stuff for AliExpress is they don't generally track the options very well or at all but these can make a big difference, as the case here and you might not want the default options and it's not like the discount or prices changes are consistent across option. Plus I'm fairly sure AliExpress has begun to mess around with different prices for different geolocations and maybe other htings although this is a bit hard to confirm given the dumb welcome deals which mean you have to login to see the real prices.
