[Christchurch] 12 Hours Free Parking @ The Landing Wigram

70

Backstory: The Landing Wigram has a parking enforcement system with cameras operating. So many people are being incorrectly fined for 'overstaying' the 3 hour limit (they go shopping in the morning, then back to a movie that night, say) where the cameras miss them and say it's been 8 hour or something.

The facebook groups are upset.

The landlord says it's contracted with Wilson's until 2026, so as a loophole, they've shared a 12 hour parking voucher :)

Edit: you can now get a 24 hour one on Parkmate

I live around there, longer backstory:

    1. Originally there was plenty of parking, and I never heard of any issues. No idea what the original posted limit was, maybe 3 hours, but I don't think it was automatically enforced. There is a New World, preschool, restaurants, vet, doctor's, shops, but nothing you would typically reach that limit.
    2. They opened up new shops, including a movie cinema and gym, and only added a small amount of extra parking. Instead they made part of the parking lot have a 3 hour limit and the rest a 1 hour limit, presumably so parks would always be available for short trips and not fill up with people watching movies.
    3. There are some town houses with limited parking right next to one of the parking lots, and some of the residents were parking their vehicles in the shopping centre parking. Due to this they started enforcing parking restrictions.
    4. I've never been hit, but there have been many tickets issue where people say that they visited the lot twice in the same day and the enforcement company is saying that they were there the whole time. This has happened to people making 2 shopping trips in one day, or even drop off/pick up at the preschool.
    5. There has been lots of people complaining on neighbourhood groups, and people saying that they now avoid the shops in the area due to getting hit with parking fines, even though many have got them cancelled, it's still a pain.
    6. The owner of 2 of the restaurants (Joe's Garage and Fush) shared this QR code to sidestep enforcement as they can't get out of the enforcement contract. Now there's just the minor nuisance of needing to scan this code when you park.

The shopping centre is in a residential area and there are typically free on street parks close by, and perhaps surprisingly I haven't seen them get too busy.

All I can add is Wilsons are scum and not to be trusted. Even if there are some bad actors from citizens, I'd almost side with them everytime over Wilsons

The problem seems to be the choice of Wilsons to enforce the limits. If they had gone with a different service that did the job properly everything would have been fine.
