    Just a note that:
    - Seagate Expansion is sold by QuickDealStore
    - WD is sold by Amazon Export Sales LLC

  • Anyone know if these are shunkable ?

    • Keen to know as well. Also which drive is inside Seagate.

Apparently shuckable with Barracuda for the 20TB

    • Data hoarder is reporting it as shuckable, but requiring a 3.3v line work around.

  • Sorry, didn’t read the description fully!!

Looks like it's likely Seagate Barracuda 20TB ID:ST20000DM001(forums.unraid.net) inside. Now I am not sure if they are good for Unraid or not.

    Another thread(reddit.com)

My understanding is barracuda's are not made to be powered on 24/7. They are good for backups and all, but not to be put in your NAS. Exos or ironwolf's are meant for 24/7 use.

  • If these are Seagate Barracudas there is a high chance they are SMR drives, which have terrible write performance once they get around half full.

If only nzd was doing better against the usd…

So is NZ$29 per gb a good price?

    • Not the best but $29 is considered very low end atm, the 16TB linked seems to be the best available atm,
We wont be getting many HDD deals like precovid times

      https://diskprices.com/?locale=au&condition=new&capacity=14-…

      • How are you getting nz$447 for the 16gb?

Im getting around nz$467 converted - which is also around nz$29 per gb.

        • The price went up since it seems

          Now:

          Items: NZD 476.53
          Delivery: NZD 26.89
          Total: NZD 503.42
          Promotion(s) Applied: -NZD 26.89
          Order Total: NZD 476.53

      • IMO it remains to be seen how much HAMR will affect prices if at all.

    • Can't when the nz interest rates are also so low, I am getting 5% interest in a savings account in australia, only problem is NZD is so low because who wants a low interest currency? People scared of their own debt (want low interest rates) end up paying more on everything else because of their low interest rates. Only people with 3+ houses may be better off with lower rates.

  • Just FYI, recently some used hard disks from Chia mining farms which have been modified to seem new have somehow made it into the supply chain of some fairly major retailers. AFAIK this hasn't affected Amazon and I think it's generally been data centre internal drives that have been affected. In some ways it seems easier to hide this in externals but they're worth a lot less. But something to be aware of

    • Should clarify there have been reports of drives being sold by Amazon being affected but these are various Amazon in Europe. Also I'm not sure if any of the reports are from drives sold by Amazon or just third party sellers on Amazon. In any case as mentioned it also seems to have been drives sold as internals
