Stay in the iconic Chunking Mansions. I did and i lived to tell the tale. Cheapest place to stay within hong kong. Chungking Mansions in Hong Kong houses the highest concentration of guesthouses in a single building within the city, with over 110 guesthouses offering approximately 1,200 rooms.

Yes I stayed in or around Chungking. Good experience. The shower was cold (ie room temperature) apparently this is common. But room temperature was pretty warm and no problem in summer. Mind you I was a single backpacker in those days. Not sure I'd take the fam there. I struggled a bit with shopping. It wasn't the bargain paradise you might think. Plenty of higher end designer shops if that's your thing. I can't speak to the prices in those because I wasn't into that. Electronics seemed on a par with our prices. I thought $2 type shops would be everywhere. Not the case either. I struggled to find stuff like a basic hairbrush. The markets were as you would expect in Asia. At least the tourist ones were. Bunches of counterfeit stuff. It was pretty funny to see all the guys selling fake rolex watches. Some literally had them on the insides of their jackets and they'd flash you them. Like the stereotypical old movies you'd imagine.

You might be better asking on travel forums. If you do, give a more detailed description. Dates of travel, budget, if you are taking kids, and interests for the best answers.

Ciry gate outlet is awesome. Its close to the cable car station that will take you Lantau island where the big Buddha is.
Times square, causeway bay is also a huge outlet.
They are both clean with hige variety of shops. It's where ive always done shopping. Oh for sure its last seasons styles, but for hoodies, etc that doesn't matter.

Accommodation that depends on where you'd like to stay, Hong Kong island, Kowloon, Lantau, New Territories. Ive stayed on all of then at different times. Thim Sha Tsu (spelling) is a good district with ladies market, jade market 8n close proximity. Once we stayed at a holiday inn express where you literally exit the hotel and enter the subway station. That was very good as Hong Kong subway is phenomenal

Shopping - go to Sham Shui Po. Easy to find on the MTR. Apliu street is stuffed with bargains - mainly techno, electrical but a great variety and a fun place to experience the real HKG, as opposed to the tourist areas. I've been travelling there for over 40 years and still find that area fascinating! Try it.

  • It really depends on what type of hobbies you're most interested in. For outdoorsy, there's a few walks with amazing/unique geological formations try the geotrail in Sai Kung. For Touristy stuff the big buddah mentioned is cool but there's also an allotment of other interesting temples like the 10,000 buddah temple, other top visited places include Avenue of Stars at Vitoria Harbour and Victoria Peak . Ocean Park, Disney Land, Kowloon Park are good for kids. There's numerous markets that can be fun to check our, Mong Kok and Shum Shui Po, electronics can also be found cheaply here.

As for other shopping, imo prices have gone up a lot for most things after Covid, so unless you like luxury brands, general retail chain store brands are now very similar prices to NZ and not really any bargains to be had anymore.

No specific recommendations to give for food or accommodation since good food can be found almost everywhere, and I've always stayed with friends/family so no experience to give any accom recommendations.
