Audio-Technica ATH-M50X Studio Monitors Headphones - Black $227 + Shipping ($0 Primate/C&C) @ Mighty Ape

70

These are good studio monitoring headphones and flat sounding as it should be for that purpose.
Mixed reviews on general use.

Also this could be a price error because there's another item for $319 https://www.mightyape.co.nz/mn/buy/mighty-ape-audio-technica…

Bunch of other good deals on Audio Technica and other brands too: https://www.mightyape.co.nz/mn/c/audiophile-sale/

  • Have had these for 7 or 8 years now and they're so damn good, but the hinges are a bit fragile, and if they break (and eventually they will) the cups will splay outwards.

I found out there are brackets which fit over the hinges to fix the issue, you can find sellers for these on etsy and ebay or 3D print your own. Absolute life saver.

  • They are really good but they are a bit outdated now. I'd suggest having a look on reddit or headfi etc for some more up to date recommendations.

I had the M40x for over 7 and half years but the hinges were cracking :/. They are really good but there is some newer stuff which is better value for money :)
My M40x were pretty neutral IMO in sound :)

    • Date of manufacturer doesn't really matter when it comes to good headphones, I've got a pair of studio headphones that I have been gifted from my father from the mid-90s and they may be one of the best ones I've ever used and I still can't find anything to this day that betters it for a decent price

      • +1

Yeah the headphone market moves very slowly.

The IEM market through. Thats been popping off. You can get some astounding iems off aliexpress for less then $100 like the ARTTI T10

        • You can get these, which I've used on the road and has been flawless. $55 USD including shipping. Could find these on temu a while ago, legit branding too

          https://kzmusicstore.com/products/kz-edx-pro-dynamic-driver-…

          • @dmenz: $55 usd including shipping for the edx pro is a massive scam. kzmusicstore is a third party reseller charging 750% markup. KZ sells the edx pro on their official aliexpress store for $8 nzd

the edc pro is considered better btw.

        • Honestly after buying some under $20 kz IEMs I'm sold. They sound good enough, cheap enough to be disposal but the replacable cable means i won't have to. I prefer their sound to my galaxy buds 2. You don't usually buy IEMs for top sound quality and I'd find kt real hard tk justify soending more for very minimal gains.

I do still think i should get a set of wired headphone for the kffice though. The IEMs arent big enough to scream dont talk to me I'm in the zone but i dont love the sound from my xm4s. They also seem to have connectivity issues in a busy office environment so i have to use a cable anyway.

          • @Everettpsycho: IEM quality really has skyrocketed over the last 2 years due to the massive competition and ease of building them. So you can get some beautifully sounding items for decent prices these days.

If you have a chance and are in auckland you should visit addicted to audio and try out the s12 pros.

  • I owned both, but M40 is considerably worse than M50 (hinge design fault - planned obsolescence?).

My M50X has lasted for about 10 years now, bought it new from NL for about $250. Gone through 2 sets of ear pads, 1 hinge. The hinge clip broke again outside warranty, so I just cable tied it together.

  • If you can deal with the bulky cable, skip these and get the Sony mdr-v6/mdr-7506

If you have a little bit of solder experience, you can cut the bulky cable and mod a 3.5mm jack into them so you can use any cable you want - including an inline boom mic which makes them amazing gaming headphones due to the sound profile. I've done this with two pairs over the last 15 years and I'd never use another headphone again.

    • Yeah I hated the M50X, love my MDR-V6 though
