Veon 55” 4K Ultra HD LED-LCD TV - $899 - The Warehouse (Delivered)

100
YW2063

This is a new TV from the Warehouse, looks like Veon have ventured into 4K Ultra HD. Im guessing this is an introductory price for them, however it is not shown as a product online, I found it in the online catalogue/mailer and when I click on the product it only shows "Find Stores", which then only shows certain Auckland Stores. However maybe other stores can order in for you.

Also with the Warehouse Visa deal as shown on another Cheapies deal, maybe you could also get up to another 10% off as well.

  • Tip for those looking at a 4K or new TV.

True 4K blu-ray players are launching in the next month and require HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 which I don't believe this TV has either of, meaning it will be unable to watch true UHD via Blu-ray or HTPC. Since there is no 4k tv broadcast now or in the near-future, the UHD is effectively just a gimmick.

Either wait and buy the next-gen 4k tv's or buy a nicer Full HD tv with the same money.

    • I don't think that is a good reason not to buy, because 4k broadcast tv is so far away.

The only issue would be if the tv had seriously gimped playback of copy protected content.

If you were upgrading to a very high end tv then yes, i agree, it's probably worth waiting. But for low end tv i think it's fine.

      • But I think most people are pushed into buying a new 4k tv because of the marketting telling them the amazing quality and features they would be getting. The truth is you are likely going to get a worse picture quality on this $900 4K tv than a 1080p branded Samsung or Sony at a similar price.

    • As somebody who has purchased this TV I can confirm your information is partially incorrect. It has 4 HDMI ports. 3 of them are 1.3 and upscales content to 4k30hz. The 4th port is 2.0 and capable to displaying true 4k60hz. It would be that 4th port you plug your new HDMI 2.0 device into.

The picture is actually pretty good, especially considering I got it for $799. 55" 4k TVs from big brands cost over twice that price.

If you want to point out a negative for this TV it would be all the missing bells and whistles. No smart features. No internet. No freeview plus. No 100hz motion processing nonsense - which theoretically isn't actually possible by current HDMI standards as far as I am aware so big brands advertising 100hz+ 4k TVs is just marketing BS.

The reason to buy this TV would be if you had absolutely no use for smart features and just wanted a 4k display without having to pay for any of those bells and whistles you had absolutely no intention of using in the first place.

      • Thanks for the review, and I guess another bonus of veon is the 3 year warranty. How did you get it down to $799 did you use 10% off using warehouse visa and something else?

        • 799 is what they were selling it for in store here in Palmerston North. I'm not sure why it's a different price to the website

        • @Stumpedify: that's a tempting price in palmy, especially if someone had warehouse visa and could get another 5 to 10% off. Shame they don't have this model and price in Blenheim would be very tempting.

  • Looks like the code allows for free delivery, have updated the deal.

  • Youtube is a huge sauce of 4k content.

    • But you will need to review how you intend to view it as I doubt this panel has VP9 meaning you won't be able to stream it from Youtube and if you are streaming from a device at 4k you will be locked at 24fps due to the bandwidth restriction on HDMI 1.4

      • Does this TV have a youtube client built in?

Or is it a basic TV only?

Agree the 4k aspect will require some thought as to how to feed it to the device.
It's well worth the warning that it's very much the wild west in 4k land at the moment, with early adopters potentially paying the price for entering before the standards are confirmed.

        • Pretty sure just a basic TV

        • +1

Yes it is just a basic TV. No smart TV features. The most it can do is playback from a USB device. To get YouTube or Netflix on it you would have to connect a PC or other media device such as an android TV box.

It has an hdmi 2.0 port which I am using to connect and play 4k video from my PC. Works at 4k60hz just fine.

        • @Stumpedify: Does the audio return channel work on the HDMI 2.0 port? Thanks!

  • 4k is the biggest scam out there. You go into a shop and this amazing picture yet you won't get that on normal TV. I recommend a roku 4 which does 4k. Remember this: anything filmed cannot be upscaled to 4k so everything ever filmed can not achieve this even when tvs start broadcasting it.

    • Huh, everything filmed?

Film as in movies shot on film is regularly scanned at 4K, even before 4K became a consumer thing. This scanned source was used to generate dvd and bluray media.

So anything filmed can be converted to 4K and I'd expect to see this as the next new thing to sell 4K bluray and downloads in the coming years.

  • Just my 2 cents, the veons are really not that bad.

They are well in the same league as branded TVs; not even close to the shittyness of the old transonics back in the day.

  • I've seen these TVs in some of the stores, might be worthwhile to check on them before buying. Maybe ring up a store beforehand and ask if they have a display model.
