Z Energy ditches Countdown Fuel Discount Vouchers

I've read on Stuff this morning that Z Energy announced yesterday that it is ditching the fuel discount vouchers at Countdown.

The company announced on Thursday that from the end of July, customers would no longer be able to redeem discount dockets offered in Countdown Supermarkets.

Chief executive Mike Bennetts said the company needed to overhaul its offer to customers because of changing desires.

"What used to excite customers three or four years ago no longer does," Bennetts said on Thursday.

"All of us, banks, supermarkets, fuel retailers are all trying to find the right way or the right combination of ways to make us more attractive."

Bennett said that part of the reason for ditching the deal with Countdown was because it constrained its ability to offer discounts elsewhere. Bennetts said the agreement with Fly Buys also constrained its ability to do commercial deals.

What do you think about this? I've set up this thread for members to discuss.

  • Also aa smart fuel is partnering with countdown:

The new partnership will enable Countdown customers to redeem their Countdown fuel dockets, issued from 1 August 2016, with AA Smartfuel partners BP and Caltex.
Later in the year, both AA Smartfuel cardholders and AA Members will be able to earn AA Smartfuel discounts when shopping at Countdown.
Over the next few months we will be working hard to put the finishing touches on this new addition to the programme.
We look forward to sharing more details closer to that time.
Meantime, it's business as usual with AA Smartfuel discounts at BP, Caltex and our existing retail partners (see www.AAsmartfuel.co.nz/shop).

  • Interesting. Can't say I ever used them other than when the discount was 20c + (Rare these days), but it will be interesting to see what it is replaced with, if anything.

    • I'm not sure what Z are replacing the Countdown fuel discount vouchers with, but I like the idea of accumulating AA Smartfuel discounts at the supermarket. This also means printed fuel discount vouchers will need to be redeemed at BP and Caltex, as mentioned above.

        Caltex

With them being bought out, I wonder how much longer that will be the case.

        • hehe, I can imagine myself at a Countdown checkout lane in the foreseeable future, opening my wallet, fumbling with my ONEcard, fumbling with that AA smartfuel card, then taking out all those coupons to redeem, then fumbling again with my EFTpos card. Oh its gonna be a long day…

        • @footy7:

Ha yea, it's bad enough with just one coupon, and nothing else.

        • @footy7: Makes me want Apple pay or Google wallet support in New Zealand. Just one fingerprint scan and you can use all the cards you want.

@ClipIt: If you have a android phone you can get this app called BeepnGo, it stores all your loyalty card barcodes in a machine readable way. I have my Flybuys, AA card, and my Onecard on there :)

    And

it’s business as usual for AA Smartfuel and Caltex. Z has stated that they intend to continue to run the Caltex brand in New Zealand (for the foreseeable future). We understand that Z will be making more detailed announcements on this in the lead up to its planned take-over of Caltex on 1 June 2016.

    • Cheers ClipIt. It's something to stay across I reckon.

  • What happened to all our Fuel Gurus. Ya missed the 10c/l off at Mobile stations today!

      • Ah! My bad. Went looking for fuel discount posts this morning before I left for work. Usually something around on a Friday. Must have been posted later in the day. Thanks (-_-。)

Should have posted that myself, at one stage I set up Distill to monitor that webpage and alert me when it changes.

Something interesting on AA Smartfuel's FaceBook Page….

Yea that's been in the media for a few days now. Interestingly, around the same time Flybuys and Airports are breaking up.

That sort of commitment also makes one believe that Caltex plan to stay part of the program for the foreseeable future. I don't imagine Countdown would be too interested otherwise.

      • Yeah, its got quite a lot of coverage. Also New World has expanded it's loyalty 'Club Card' to the North Island.

That's going to be the New Onecard!
