Mitre10 Giftstation gift card expiration

Hi, does anyone know how to extend the validity of a Mitre10 giftstation.co.nz (ePay) gift card? Was under the impression could simply recharge the minimum ($20) and it would extend whole balance validity for another 24 months. But can't find this for the Mitre10 card T&C http://www.giftstation.co.nz/mitre-10.html only some other cards. It does mention recharges on the general T&C but it's not clear that this applies to all cards since it does say "expiration term varies by merchant" http://www.giftstation.co.nz/terms-and-conditions/ .

Obviously don't want to recharge if it isn't going to help any & not sure if epay will get back to me in time. I'm also not sure where I recharge, is it only at Mitre10 or can it be any outlet which sells the cards?

If this isn't going to work, since there isn't anything I really want at Mitre10, guess I'll have to buy something and return it since fortunately Mitre10 still have a no fault return policy if unopened etc. I assume only option will be to get another giftcard, but to be expected. (I've often wondered if they'll let you buy a gift card with a gift card, but never had courage to try.)

  • Some more not that important details:

About 2 years ago exchanged my expiring Emirates Skywards airpoints for 2 gift cards. Decided to maximise value by getting 2 NZ$250 gift cards even though I had to pay for it. (Was just under NZ$403). Perhaps a mistake but at the time I thought would likely use within a year or 2. Did check about expiration, and decided both would be fine. It seemed they were from Giftstation.co.nz and would be able to extend validity by recharging the $20 minimum before expiration. Or at least I thought.

When gift cards arrived, Noel Leeming seemed to be ordinary NL gift card. Actually that was better since in some ways since it didn't seem to have an expiration date. In any case, I used all the remaining balance a few weeks ago for a new microwave (had to pay extra).

Mitre10 was giftstation.co.nz (Epay) as expected, I noticed validity was 24 months (think was expecting 12 months) but didn't pay much attention to T&C on card. Only now noticing it doesn't say anything about recharging. Didn't keep a proper record of Mitre10 page. Do have an email from someone at epay at the time which suggests recharge trick applies to Mitre10 but it isn't as clear as I would like and since it's expiring on 2.7 a bit risky to argue over it if they disagree.

  • Try asking in store.

  • Forgot to update this. I got a response from giftstation.co.nz quite quickly and they confirmed it not possible to topup the Mitre10 cards or extend validity. They did offer to look into extending for me, but decided not to risk that especially since would probably only be a month or two. (I have read there tends to be a 1 month grace period anyway.)

So instead went in store, purchased a sander and returned it a few days later getting a new gift card with another 2 years. I accidentally chose one which wasn't sealed but wasn't a big deal, they just called the someone who opened and checked it. I paid $7 or so in cash, but didn't bother to argue they should return the cash.

  • Further notes on gift cards in general:

Does a shop have to honour a gift voucher indefinitely if there’s no expiry date on it?

Yes, unless the shop has closed down or changed ownership. Many gift vouchers will show an expiry period of 6 to 12 months to give you a reasonable time to use it. If there is no expiry date then you can use the voucher whenever you want.

Major player Epay, which operates gift-card programmes on behalf of various retailers, said it provides a grace period of a minimum 14 days for the cards it sells. The company operates the “Gift Station” displays found in supermarkets and other retail outlets.

But grace periods aren’t advertised and unless you ask you may not find out about them. Any money remaining on the card won’t be refunded.

So according to Epay, if your card expired less than 14 days ago, they will still honour it.
