  • Nice, looks like it's fresh pork for Sunday roast this week! Cheers mate.

  • I don't know about anyone else, but I'm always being told to hurry up while at the supermarket because apparently I spend too long looking for the good deals….oh and the bakery section.

    • I've converted my wife over to the cheap side, she now spends just as long as I do looking for the best value. My the savings be with you.

We actually don't spend a lot of time shopping, most of the stuff can be checked online, before we go, as we have a New World and Countdown around which both have online stores with specials etc.

      • +1

I don't often check online, I guess because most of the time I tend to go without a list. And because I've mapped my 'most used isles' in my head I tend to just scan prices as I go and have this internal monologue that's says….yep…yep…nope…etc.

But it also means when I go with the intention of getting bread and bananas I come out with $50 worth of shopping, because Kumera was $2 a kg etc!

One of my this years favourite deal was brocolli for 20 cents each, you can imagine how much I brought!

        • Yea, a lot of strategic placements and well marketed specials that catch peoples eyes.

Ahh nice deal that! Don't forget to post it next time aye haha

Our family friend (Yea, the only one) is a market gardener, so walking into the chiller and grabbing a few days worth of veges is a regular occurrence for us, taste even better when just cut from the field. Definitely beats eating pasta, and the price of cauliflower is horrendous.

        • @Shaw: fresh cut is amazing, your lucky. try to grow a little bit at home but its usually ready at only certain points throughout the year.

I would have put up the brocolli deal, but it was that particular store only and only got there at night, changed next morning.

        • @Hamster:

Yea, it's good. Have to pick the bugs off too, so that's a good sign they aren't sprayed to death. Yea, that's the problem, unless you pick a few varieties and grow them in between each other, I'm not exactly sure if it's possible without proper gear though. There are some trees he's got planted that are late fruiting feijoas, I ate the last of them a few weeks ago, weeks/months late.

All good, I used to post a lot of local deals when I was in Wellington, it seemed to be a bit more competitive there, especially in Lower Hutt with all the supermarkets close, but up here it isn't as much.

One thing you can do, if you wanted to, was to take a photo of the price sign at the shop, and just post it from your phone, using the captured image as the deal URL. done that a few times too, with supermarket deals.

        • @Shaw: Guess you also have to get into the habit/remember to do it. I often take photos for personal use (enough so I've been told off for it in different stores more than once), although most of these deals I'm not sure if I'd upload. But there was actually a deal in Countdown Lincoln Road I'd have uploaded if I thought about it. But since ending in about 4 hours (and no idea if they still have stock) probably no point now. Tegel 1kg nuggets, chicken bites etc (I think all of them except for the 750g free range nuggets and maybe the flame grilled steaks or whatever they're called) are $8 each. Quite a good deal, generally the best I find them in Countdown is $10. I think I may have gotten them at $9 or maybe $9.49 before at Pak'n'save but can't recall I've seen them at $8 before.

        • @Nil Einne:

Yea that's not bad aye, those are usually $12-$14 IIRC. I've found recently that there have been some really good chicken deals, especially boneless and/or skinless breast for around $7/KG, would pick that over nuggets any day, as it's just meat, but all comes down to the purpose really.

        • @Nil Einne: Had arguments in the past with the manager of that particular store, over their pricing policies etc.. Several times, price charged at the checkout hasn't been correct, or the shelf labelling not accurate.

She's argued the toss until I've marched her down to the said shelf display. Then she got upset when I photographed the display for possible later verification. Even heard mere shelf re-stockers telling her off. Pointed out to her that not even her own staff seemed to have much confidence in her abilities to manage a market.

Usually avoid that Countdown when possible.

  • im sure those banana breads are only 3.50ish normally, still yum tho

    • They often have them on sale at $3.50 for a whole week. (Sometimes for more.) Don't think they were this week though.

      • I actually got 1 for $1.50, not sure why, maybe a day older than the rest. Not complaining

  • Good deal

  • Went to 2 supermarkets, neither have any stock of the pork. Looks like it's frozen roast this Sunday.

  • Did anyone get the pork roast deal? What time did you get to countdown?

    • +1

Went in at 7am this morning, none. They said they got none delivered. Sounded a bit bullshit to me.

Ordered some online, plus this deal for free pickup, going in on Monday, so will see what I get.

    • Went to Countdown Lincoln Road at about 8pm on Thursday. There were 2 Pork legs left, no shoulders. One was about 1.8kg but the bag which was one of those normally partially vacuum sealed ones had air in it. I'm not sure it had a hole in it as I couldn't seem to push out air and this wouldn't be an issue if planning to cook in the next few days but I wasn't sure when I'd cook it. Another was 2.8kg and seemed to be in good condition. So purchased the 2.8kg one. Was wondering if they'd get more the next day and I had to visit a nearby shop, so popped back in at about 4 pm on Friday but no sign of any or of the sale.

      • … the next day and I had to visit a nearby shop, so popped back in at about 4 pm on Friday but no sign of any or of the sale.

We had the same experience at 2 stores, no signs at all, looks like they over did it and refused to supply any more due to the price.

      • Always wary of vacuum-sealed bags which aren't tight. Have also purchased sealed meat (silverside etc) which later weighed out to have 200-300 grams of water/fluid as part of the bought weight.

These days, being more inclined to use the smaller owner-run butchers who usually know where their meats have come from and how it has been handled etc.. Their prices are often not that different from the supermarkets, given the oft significant difference in quality and providence.

  • Just picked mine up now, ordered 3 quantity (kg) and got a bag with 2 roasts in it. Will check the weight when I get back. Looks like a good way to do it though. If you can get free pickup.
