Passport photos

For Nz passport, is there a dimension (mm) requirement or just ratio? Do they use the digital copy to put on the passport?

What's the choicest method to get your photo done? Warehouse stationery? Can you print your own at 50 cents or whatever they're charging per page?

edit: For new passport

    https://www.passports.govt.nz/passport-photos/ has all the info.

You can take and print your own as long as it fits the spec, but from memory they are quite strict.

it's usually around $20 to get it taken, emailed, and printed from a local photo store or NZPost.

    • Have read it, doesn't say the dimensions of the physical copy. Are these for file only? And they use the digital for printing on the actual passport paper?

Not sure there are any physical dimension requirements, just the requirements on this page.

Pretty sure with online renewal you don't have to print a photo and it's all digital.

Shaw's gone through the effort of finding that link and you can't even be bothered reading it. Just expecting him to find all the information for you.

I've read it before making this thread, I know how to google. As he said, it doesn't say the dimensions, which is the first information I was looking for, thanks for your input though.

          @justaddwater:
NZ dimensions for a print out is 35x45mm.

        • @rkl: thank you!

        • Dimension doesn't matter as long as it meet the 4:3 aspect ratio and max file size of 5Mb - for online application.

Do it yourself. You don't even have to print them. Store charge closer to $30 if you print them

    • Wow $30 is a joke. Stores I know charge $10…

      • $10 to shoot and print? Where?

        • Yeap $10 to shoot and print, $10 to shoot and email and $15 for both.
Unsure If I can say, Maybe Mods can delete comment if need be (I work here) Airport oaks Pharmacy

        • @rkl: thanks

          @rkl:

For comparison sake I don't have a problem with you mentioning where you work and the pricing, as long as you make it clear you work there, as you did. Pretty decent pricing too. Maybe the boss would want to post a $15 for 2 people or $25 for 3 people deal on Cheapies? Haha

@Shaw: Depending on where most of the members are I may be able to sort something as some of my other stores. Have one out west and one in Hamilton. Will talk to the business partners

Oh you are part of the ownership group? Nice. Yea, the more local and small businesses we can get on here the better.

    • You don't have to print?

Apply online, don't need to have a print out. Just a digital Copy. Keep in mind scanning in a print out 99% WONT work.

I'm in the lower southisland, I went in because I needed a drivers licence picture, which cost the 20c printing fee (only to find out I needed it to be signed by someone who knew me as proof I was me) and they asked if I would like to also get a passport picture taken while I was there and emailed, it was <$10 from memory. It wouldn't hurt to call anyways

It's really easy to DIY your own passport photos and apply online - it's way faster than filling out an application form and sending it through the post. If you're not sure if your ID photo meet the requirement, just use the government's passport photo checker.

Done it about 20 to 30 times already for all my friends and family. Did my fathers' two weeks ago, and the passport arrived within a week of application submission.

    Here's some tip:
    - Make sure the background is a plain light colour (e.g. White wall)
    - Make sure the room is well lit (natural light is the best if you don't have a dslr flash gun)
    - Don't lean right against the wall/background, 90% of the time it will create a shadow, stand at least half a meter away)
    - Crop the photo to 4:3 aspect ratio - measurement doesn't matter as long it meets the ratio requirement
    - If you don't know how to do the placement for cropping, use your old passport photo as guide or just have a look at NZ Passport website

One thing nice about taking your own photo is you can pick the one you like and can take as many as you like!!

        New as in first?

If you’re a New Zealand citizen and you’ve never had a New Zealand passport (even as child) and are 16 years or older, you can apply online or via paper.
To apply online you need a RealMe verified account in the same name you want in your passport. This is not the same as a RealMe login.
Set up a RealMe verified identity (This may take several days)
        You also need:
the mobile phone associated with your RealMe verified identity
a digital photo - taken in the last 6 months, in colour, as a .JPG or .JPEG file. Find out more information on Passport photos
credit card or debit card or prezzi card - no eftpos, Paypal, or electronic bank transfer. A standard adult passport costs $180.
