It is a platinum card, so these fees are not unreasonable. Net payoff (after fees) is 205 airpoints dollars.

Essentially, this is a way to convert $195 into $400 worth of airpoints dollars.

You also get a very good earn rate, 1 airpoints dollar per $59 spent - this is a 1.69% return on your spend. Good for groceries, petrol and big ticket items PROVIDED YOU HAVE THE CASH SET ASIDE TO PAY IT BACK AT THE END OF THE INTEREST FREE PERIOD!!

      • Been tossing up if its worth switching from the ASB Visa plat to this. But from what I read AMEX is not as widly accepted so I wont be able to earn as many points.

Have both? Then cancel amex within the year?

My experience with amex is that acceptance is mostly limited to big outfits, but that's most of my spending, so.

        • @2cheep: yeah same, I've had the AmEx Platnium Edge before, the free return domestic flight per year was worth more than the fee ($149 vs WLG to DUN return) so it was worth it. Could use it at supermarkets and petrol stations, and to pay most utility bills. What annoyed me enough to give it up eventually was I paid at Gazley in Wellington with it once, then had a bit of work done in the Hutt and they wouldn't take it so I missed out on heaps of points.
There is currently a promotion on the AmEx Platnium Edge, 20,000 points if you spend $750 in the first 3 months, a $100 Countdown voucher is 16000 points. So ~200 for flight + $100 voucher - fee = $150 gain.

  • is airnz airpoints free to join? is the joining fee incl in the card fee?

    • Airpoints was free to join for me outside of a credit card - stands to reason it will be free here? I know card providers sometimes charge a fee to subscribe to a rewards system, but surely they can't do that here given its free normally?

      • A few years ago they charged you $50 to join but it's been free for a while now

  • Note status points are 1 per $250 with this card. They are 1 per $200 with the Kiwibank one. Status points are tough to earn so KB may be better for you.

    • Status points are so easy to earn. I sit on max status points permanently.
It's the status points via flights that are tough to earn.

      • How else do you earn them?

        • +1

I have the Kiwibank Mastercard Platinum Airpoints card, I can only earn 50% of the status points required for the next level from the card, 50% have to come from flights.

900 status points to get to Gold, half from credit card spend so 450 points at $200/status point is $90,000 in a year. I'd say the large large majority of people don't spend $90,000 a year (just to get half the status points for Gold), so yeah gotta disagree with you there.

        • I spend about 50-60k on CC py and max it out.

  • I was with Amex and their customer service is crap. Everything is done my post and so much delay. I noticed a lot places I couldn't use my Amex so combined with that, I cancelled my card after 9 months and went on to Westpac and they had a bonus airports sign up that month. Would rather pay the account fee to get better service.

Remember there is a complimentary domestic return flight each year and Amex Platinum Airpoint card also includes two airport lounge access (and 2 additional lounge access at Sydney airport).

    • Can't find that perk on the webpage. I think that was a prev offer?

      • Yes you are correct! Complimentary flights seem to have been taken off the Platinum Airpoint card! Although there is still lounge access with this card.
The complimentary flights are still there for the Platinum Edge card.

        • It's actually only 4 passes a year (2 to their Sydney lounge and 2 priority passes).

        • @stuntah: Have called to confirm that complimentary flights no longer available for Platinum Airpoint card. And yes, 4 passes included with the base fee (2 in Sydney and 2 Priority Passes), Priority Pass has also confirmed the card enrols you to their basic membership which means you will be able to access lounges at a pay per visit basis after the 2 complimentary passes.

  • Wish AMI accepted AmEx, got $1000 house insurance to pay. Just put car and contetns on the Westpac MC Platinum, met the $1k spend in 2 days :D Bring on the points.
