  • This is probably the best deal so far for a 12 months contract.

    • Yea, the lower monthly price sets it apart from the others offering 3 months free. Works out around $700 for the year versus around $850.

  • how's the service of Orcon? can anyone comment?

      • Thanks Shaw, seems better than my current ISP Bigpipe

        • Yea, I'm with them too. Waiting until until UFB is available here in a couple of months before changing. These deals should still be going on then.

    • +1

Orcon is pretty nice, No issues on fibre with them. Currently on spark contract due to the 3 month free 1000/500 plan that got released last year in Auckland so i'm stuck till december before I can change on to a better deal. The nice thing about orcon is they gave a really good router/modem for rental which is way better than the free Huawei ones provided by other ISP.

Your address checker might be a bit out of date, we are in a fibre only area(in Dunedin) and your site says we can only get adsl(Spark/Orcon checkers provide correct info). Clicking extreme fibre on the filter does not show a gigatown offer which orcon have, is that plan excluded from this offer?

Great value as people have said :)

    • +1

      Heya

Yeah, this sometimes happens, as we use third party to tell what broadband technology (https://broadbandmap.nz/) you got :(
If that website says you can't get fibre, then we show that you can't get it as well. However, let me know if it does then the issue might be on our site :)

Regarding if the plan applies to Gigatown, I will find out and come back to you :)

  • This is the same deal on broadbandcompare.co.nz isn't it? free for 3 months, then $79 (full price) for 9 months as so on

3 months free=half price for 6 months over 12 months

    • +1

Effectively the same price, but a different deal.

  • Is there a 200/20 plan available for a similar deal?

    • +1

Yeah, and 950/500. The price is slightly higher though. Just select "Extreme Fibre" on the filter :)

  • shouldnt deal link point to glimp?

    • It did before but don't know what happened there.
Hence, I've put the other links in the description, just use those for now :)

  • Looks like the 14.95 modem shipping fee still applies?

    • Probably, as that shipping fee applies to All ISP who gives out modems =/. Had to pay for mine on spark and vodafone aswell.

      • Don't orcon require it back at the end of the contract if you move to another ISP?

        • +1

Yes they do, When you decide to cancel with them. They will send you a return bag so you can send the modem back to them. They provided me with a Fritzbox 7490 when on their fibre 1000 plan. Vodafone and Spark gives out the free HuaWei cheap generic modems that constantly disconnects my Wifi connection. If you swap enough ISP, you would probably end up with quite a stash of those huawei modems so I don't see keeping it or not is an issue lol
FYI the fritzbox modem is really really good and they have super good reviews aswell =)

  • Just bought a house, found out it is ADSL (maybe ADSL2+) only for another 2 yrs. Haven't been on adsl for a few years - how is it now, and who is fastest/most reliable?

    • +1

Fastest and most reliable? ADSL2+? Depends almost entirely on how far from the cabinet you are. Most providers offer max line speed which is up to 24/1.

      • is there any way i can test distance from the cab? i've asked vodafone to check with downer whether there is cable, but not holding out hope

    • Before fibre was rolled out to my place last year I could only get ADSL and I used Orcon, they had their own equipment at my local exchange which gave me a better sync rate than Chorus' equipment which is a bit more conservative. I had no problems with them at all and they have quite a few people on Geekzone who will help you if you're having problems. Only downside is an overseas call centre so if you have to get support via them it can be a bit difficult.

  • The positive comments here are very surprising. Orcon has, without a doubt, the worst customer service I have ever experienced. Last year they screwed up absolutely everything and anything I asked them to do.

They were great 10-15+ years ago. These days I wouldn't touch them.

    • +1

TBH I swapped out of Orcon coz their customer service did suck. Was with slingshot before that which was also really bad customer service… Moved on to vodafone and i left due to them keep screwing up on my account and double billing me each month which never got fixed. Now I'm on spark and so far so good lol…
For me I just see ISP's as all having bad customer service in general as the majority of the people you call have very little knowledge and will follow some form of scripted diagnosis and when they can't help you, they pass you on and the loop begins =p. You usually won't have to deal with them unless issues happen and I think its quite rare.

I would just pick an ISP purely on the internet speed consistency which Orcon does provide and also on their pricing. Whom ever provides the cheapest monthly plans for my needs would get my money =)

I think the positive comments here are more directed towards the internet service they provide rather than their customer service. I dont really value the customer service as much anymore as been through a lot of ISP's and it usually really depends on your luck. Its all dependent on who is on the other end that picks up your call. =)

      • You raise some good points. I basically choose a provider with the same logic as you do and like you say issues happen very rarely.

Hoping with the release of Fibre there will be even less issues. Soon enough, I'm seeing the broadband industry, especially with the rollout of fibre, becoming more like power industry where it just works. fingers crossed

  • Does anyone know which router do they provide and what will be early termination fee for 2 degrees with almost 10 months to go in a 2 year fiber contract? Cheers

(ii) an early termination charge of $249 if you leave before the end of the term. We may reduce the early termination charge where applicable to take into account any upfront Charges you have previously paid for that Connection.

      (d) If you signed up to a fixed term Plan without a 2degrees-supplied modem, you agree to pay an early termination charge of $99 if you leave before the end of the term.

I think the modem is the same that iinet used to use in Aussie, but I'm not sure of the model number.

  • One thing with the contract is it appears you have to give a months notice prior to cancellation. So if people should take a note of this if they are planning on moving after that. I just signed up to a 12 month contract with Spark again, where I get 3 free months. Not as good as the orcon deal, but I didn't want to be bothered with the potential disruption of the phone at this stage.

    • I think all of the providers have that clause don't they?

      • I am not sure that Spark do, as I don't recall seeing that clause in their terms. From my understanding when the contract ends, you can then transfer out at any time without penalty, nor have to give 30 day prior notice. The downside with these other ISPs, is that the 30 day clause potentially means you could be paying for a month with two different providers at teh same time, even though only one is able to provide the service.

        • Spark has a 30 day prior notice as I have asked them before I signed up with them. Orcon also has this 30 day notice as I cancelled from then before too. Vodafone didnt have this clause as they were my most recent ISP which i cancelled before moving to spark =).

          http://www.spark.co.nz/help/other/terms/personal-terms/resid…
Section 21 states the 30 days minimum notice.

  • Unsure why this is expired…. The deal is valid until 30/09/17 according to the website.

    • Communicated by the provider, hence had to expire it :(

I'm sure similar or better deal will be back in the future from Orcon.
