For those confused about all the different earphones Xiaomi sells, here they are from cheapest to most expensive:

Mi In-Ear Headphones Basic (3rd generation/current), AKA Fresh, AKA Basic. These are them. They're usually about US$4-5, so this is a slight discount. They came out in Dec 2016.
Piston Air AKA Capsule = US$10
Piston 2 = US$10, replaced by Piston 3 = US$15 replaced by Piston 4, AKA Mi In-Ear Headphones Pro, AKA Hybrid, AKA Dual Driver. US$15
Mi In-Ear Headphones Pro HD, AKA Hybrid Pro, AKA Triple Driver. US$22
Mi ANC (noise cancelling) and Type-C cable In-Ear Headphones. US$45

The multi-naming system… well, it needs a bit of work.

They are pretty much all good value — they perform well for the price. Best value overall = Piston 4 at US$15/NZ$20 on Ebay, you'll struggle to find anything else under $50 that sounds better. (You may also struggle if you search for 'piston 4' because of all the names used for this model.)

  • What's the noise cancelling version like?

    • Apparently it's pretty good, but keep in mind that with the USB-C plug and the device-dependent noise cancelling it's not widely compatible: Xiaomi Mi6, Xiaomi Mi Max 2, Samsung Galaxy S8, and Huawei Mate 9 work with them but I'm not sure about any other phones. If you want low-cost noise cancelling with wider support (3.5mm plug), consider the Audio Technica ATH-ANC33iS which goes for about NZ$110-130. Of course the best performance is up at the $450-550 range with Bose and Sony, but that's out of reach for most people.

      • Ah that would explain why it doesn't fit in my iPhone.

Well it didn't initially, but I got some tools from the shed, and now that plug fits right in the iPhone hole. Doesn't sound too good though, if at all really. Not a plug and play fit for sure, no idea how the average person is supposed to make this work. The USB C plug type is generally useless for apple without the DIY work mentioned above. And the iPhone has a plastic case, so watch for this when you're grinding the plug. Total pain job, huge pain in my as, complete son of a bi
