  • I like the pbtech offer, however I'm not sure if it's parallel imported which may have some warranty implications.

    • Pb tech use local stock now. They specify when it's imported (only for random phones that aren't routinely available locally)
I got my s8+ from them preorder and am very happy. It was/is a 2degees unit.

Noel leeming exclude Samsung phones from their bonus voucher deals

I would be getting the pb deal. Might look at it for the wife

    • +1

even if it is parallel imported, pb tech has warranty on all their imported phones + you have CGA protection under NZ laws so there should never be any issues there

  • Does anyone know any extra bonus offers that can be used with this? eg. sometimes you can get a bonus voucher from Noel leeming if you spend over $899 with your warehouse card… or anything like that?

  • Hehe I like that last bit "JB Hifi -$0 Value (jbhifi.co.nz) * Nothing?" Remember their infamous "Ask for a deal" sales pitch and on their flyers. You might possibly get the best deal from them if you are great at bargaining.

  • Ouch, that 3300mah battery will be useless with that phone screen size. Id recommend the new mi mix 2 over this anyday…
    http://m.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_mi_mix_2-8529.php

That camera quality is disappointing too at 13mp

    • Camera is probably the best camera. It's also about the lens quality, ois quality, aperture size, and pixel size. Not just #mp.

Not saying the mi mix2 isn't a great phone and probably way better price, historically their phones haven't had the best camera.

  • +1

hard to justify the price when the S8+ can be had for ~$1000.
$600 for 2gigs of ram extra and a pen.

    • though you could sell the bits it comes with and get a superior phone for around the same price. I sold the bonuses on my S8+ and ended up cost neutral after selling my S7

      • The accessories are probably worth $300 at the most on Trademe. That makes the Note 8 a ~$1300 phone.

    • Where can you get 8+ for 1k?

      • -1

~$1000 for a parallel imported one. $1130 from 1-Day (Local stock I think), today only.

Fingerprint sensor location is an instant fail for me, especially for the bigger S8+ and Note 8.

        • +2

1 day is parallel or refurb. Not local.
I be careful as imports are a 1 year non Samsung warranty. Local you get a 2 year warranty and they are awesome to deal with too.

You'd be surprised. Don't really need the fingerprint sensor cus of the iris scanner

        • @rkl: AFAIK 1-Day always states whether an item is parallel imported or refurbished. 1-Day is part of The Warehouse group so they will have access to official distribution channels.

An additional year of warranty is not worth the premium IMO as phones typically don't fail in the 2nd year, unless it's the fault of the user. I mean I have a Mi5 and the savings easily outweigh the lack of warranty support. With regards to the iris scanner, I think it's a good system however glasses could be a problem for a few people.

        • @Avantime: The phone from 1-day you linked is parallel imported, from the description:

          International Variant/US Compatible LTE
The SM-G955F is an international variant of the Galaxy S8+. The SM-G955F's LTE radio is tuned to frequencies that are most often used in the United States and North America, as well as Europe and elsewhere. To ensure this phone will work with your carrier please check to make sure the frequencies your carrier uses are supported by this phone. The full list of compatible carrier frequencies can be found here, the frequencies this phone supports can be found in the product specs.
Because the SM-955F is an international variant the language of the box and the default language of the phone may not be in English. Also, an international AC to USB adapter may be included.

        • @Wellington: SM-G955F is also the New Zealand version, as sold in Noel Leeming and PB Tech.

Parallel imported products on 1-day (example) are always labelled "Branded import" and have this following disclamer:

Branded Import products are sourced globally to bring you the real deal for a real steal. Manufactured to international specifications, all our Branded Import products are genuine, carry our trademark 1-day 12 month guarantee and are ready for you to enjoy at a fraction of the cost…. So click with confidence!

        • @Avantime: yes I understand that, but as you can see in my comment, they state "Because the SM-955F is an international variant the language of the box and the default language of the phone may not be in English. Also, an international AC to USB adapter may be included.", meaning that there is a chance it could not be the NZ edition. That model number is sold in a number of other countries, and if imported would still count as a parallel import for warranty purposes, the model number is irrelevant. I would also have to disagree with your statement that a second year or warranty is not worth it - phones often fail in the second year….

  • Lg v30 any news about price. I think that's the phone to beat if price is right.

    • Ive had bootloops with my LG G4 and my LG Nexus 5X and that has already made me more wary of LG (which is a shame because i prefer the LG skin to the samsung one).
But ive kept an eye on the reviews just in case and some have been pretty unflattering about the display
      eg https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/09/lg-v30-hands-on-lgs-…

At this point I am gonna wait and see what the next apple iphone 8 looks like and pick between that, the note 8 (if the price drops) and S8+.

If the camera wasnt rubbish, the essential phone might have ticked all the boxes for me.

  • I'm tempted to buy a xiaomi mi6. If you can avoid gst and duty is about $500-$550 odd and sounds like it's a great phone, about 85% as good as an s8 for 50% of the price.

I don't like the s8 curved screen so I'm interested in seeing the note8 which is supposed to be a lot less curved.

    • If you buy from Aliexpress they usually mark the price lower (otherwise you can always ask for it). Got mine for 379 USD delivered.

      • +1

how do you like your mi6, which seller did you use? got a link?

        • I also got a Mi6 from Aliexpress, $515 NZD delivered a couple of months ago when it went on sale.

Great phone, not a fan of the curved screen on the S8 either, Mi6 has nice understated look but still real premium feel to it, runs great, super fast, camera is great. Only small issue I found is the 4k video stabilization seemed a little bit off when i tested it briefly, the focus kept re-adjusting weirdly, but maybe can mess with the settings, or a software update will probably fix it. Other than that everything works great so far.

Came with official global rom sealed packaging etc, minor detail - like all Xiaomi phones there is no New Zealand for the 'locale', so I just set to United States and all works fine. Gets good 4G coverage / speeds on vodafone.

Came with the proper global Miui 8 - but Miui 9 is rolling out OTA soon, and reviews for that seem very good, adds the split screen apps and other stuff. And you can flash the official Miui 9 beta if you cant wait for the official update.

I got from the below shop on aliexpress who were good, packaged it well, but it's not as cheap there as it was when I got it so probably worth shopping around. Just check reviews to make sure the seller is ok.

          https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Original-Xiaomi-Mi6-Mi-6-Mob…

They did put $20 on the customs form haha, but I think all of them do pretty much.

        • It was on special but it's back to full price now. I think Gearbest had it for same price few weeks ago. Keep an eye in OzBargain mobile deals.

I bought mine through Xiaomi MC Store.

  • Made my order at Harvey Norman I believe is the best offer
