I realised that Spark has pretty good roaming packs. They are excellent value in comparison with Vodafone and 2Degrees; the later of which commits highway robbery on roaming. If you are only going there for a short trip it can make more sense than getting a local SIM, particularly if we're talking about Japan, SKorea, USA and Canada which have pretty high upstart SIM costs. Plus there's also the niceness of being able to keep your NZ number while overseas. The other nice thing is being able to roam to both NTT DoCoMo and Softbank in Japan. DoCoMo is slow, but has good coverage for tramping. Softbank is lightning fast but the coverage is limited to the biggest cities. A similar advantage exists for the USA with Spark, being able to roam to both AT&T (coverage) and T-Mobile USA (speed).
