To receive the bonus points, you must apply directly via our exclusive AMEX partner link by Tuesday July 31, be approved and spend $1,500 on your new Card in the first 3 months.

Key card benefits

In addition to 400 bonus Airpoints Dollars, there are a number of generous card member benefits which more than offset the $195 annual fee. These include:
* 4 airport lounge invites each year (two to the AMEX Lounge, located in Sydney and Melbourne airports, and two Priority Pass entries)
* Smartphone and travel insurances
* Koru joining fee waiver (save $255) and a saving of $145 per year on the annual fee when you become an Air New Zealand Koru member
* Earn 1 Airpoints Dollar per $59 spent

Offer eligibility

To be eligible for the 400 bonus Airpoints Dollars, you must not have held a card directly issued by AMEX New Zealand in the past 18 months. You’ll need to be able to report a personal pre-tax income of $65,000.

You won’t find this offer available publically on the AMEX website, or via any other partner – you must apply directly via our exclusive link by Tuesday July 31.

  • Any feedback from any cheapies member about this offer or about the usability of AMEX? Never owned one. TIA

Hi dealhore, provided you are able to use the 400 bonus Airpoints Dollars, you will come out $205 ahead. The 4 x lounge passes and travel insurance are other card perks you may be able to benefit from if you travel occasionally.

AMEX has grown their merchant network considerably in recent times, and is accepted without surcharge at numerous retailers, including New World, Countdown, Bunnings and more. A handy list of NZ merchants that accept AMEX is located here: https://www.americanexpress.com/nz/content/acceptance/index.…

      • Thanks for the response and for the list of merchants. I guess one thing that is probably different in the way AMEX offers travel insurance is that you need to purchase your travel with the card(Amex). With BNZ plat visa you just need to have the card on you and could have paid for the travel via other means and still be eligible for traveL insurance.

        • You'll still need to pay for your air tickets using your bnz card to activate your travel insurance.

        • @bigbosssnake:

Not from what ive read you just need to have it on you while travelling.

        • @dealhore:
          2. Pre-paid Travel Costs
'Pre-paid travel costs' mean the following expenses:
          (i) Return overseas travel tickets;
(ii) Airport, departure and transportation taxes and/or
          surcharges;
          (iii) Pre-paid overseas accommodation; and/or
(iv) Pre-paid international tour and/or transport costs
          (excluding rental vehicle hireage).
          3. Joint and Additional BNZ Platinum Cardholders
A joint or additional BNZ Platinum Cardholder who is
a spouse or dependent child travelling with the BNZ
Platinum Cardholder, will be covered under the policy
          as an accompanying insured person.
If you are a joint or additional BNZ Platinum
Cardholder who is not a spouse or dependent child,
you will be covered under the policy in your own right,
provided you have satisfied the requirements in this
          clause C. Insurance Eligibility Clause.

        • @bigbosssnake: Insurance Eligibility Clause
          1. To be eligible for cover under this policy
You must be a BNZ Platinum Cardholder (including
joint and additional cardholders) at the time you make
any payment towards your pre-paid travel costs. Your
          spouse and/or dependent children accompanying
you on the journey are also covered by this policy. The
following requirements set out in this clause C. must also
          be satisfied.

        • @bigbosssnake:

Yes you need to be a BNZ Plat cardholder at the time you make any payment towards your pre-paid travel costs but it doesnt say that you have to make that payment via the BNZ card. Sorry am i reading this wrong?

    • I got an AMEX. Can be useful but I rarely use it- only when I forget my main Visa. They do have cashback deals from time to time which are worth it (e.g. spend $50 get $15 refunded) so worth keeping as a spare IMO (but maybe get their fee-free card instead).

      • May I ask why you use your Visa more than your AMEX? I find AMEX gives the best return on purchases etc.

I currently have this card and a few things to note before you buy:

      • You need to sign up a second Priority pass card for your supplement card when using your lounge passes. Else you will be charged for your guest.

      • You are meant to get one complimentary domestic travel flight each year. But good luck trying to claim it.

      • Their customer service is woeful.

      • Their online portal is the worst I've seen. It is atrocious and that is being kind.

      • The points per $ spent are the best out there and they do offer deals quite often. Like just now they are offering $5 off per $15 spent 3 times at Burger Fuel.

  • Can anyone tell me if we are able to invite our spouse/family onto the airport lounges using this card, and if yes, whether there are additional entry fees payable? TIA

    • +1

Hi Imphee, the card provides access to the American Express Lounge (located at Sydney and Melbourne Airports) twice yearly, and two Priority Pass network lounge visits each year. At the AMEX lounge, you could opt to use one of your two passes to admit your spouse, but if you are travelling with more than one adult, a further entry will cost you $55. Children aged 2-17 years can join you at no cost.

Priority Pass lounges vary in terms of fees, but again, you could use your second pass to admit an adult travelling with you. Looking at the Auckland Emperor Lounge as an example, kids under 5 are free, and additional adult entries cost $49. Hope that helps.

      • Thanks that was going to be my second question.

    • Usually you have to use the extra passes to bring them in (ie 1 for you, 1 for them).

I signed up to this a couple of months ago. Not sure if i got passes or not but the 400 bonus points is really good. Also it has the best conversion rate. Using amex day to day is pretty useless as most places only accept visa or MasterCard. I only signed up bc we were purchasing about 10k with of appliances so i could track up a big bill and get some free airports at the same time.

  • Does anyone know if we get the 4 free airport lounge as soon as the $1500 is spent on the card or probably in the 1st calendar month of the amount being spent on the card?
When does the $195 fee get charged? A year after having the card? What if you close the card within 2months?

    • Hi hval, the AMEX lounge passes are available as soon as you receive your card (you simply present your card at the lounge entrance for swiping). You'll need to apply separately for the Priority Pass lounge entries, and can do this once you receive the card. The annual fee is typically charged in the first month of card membership. Hope that helps.

Why NZ Amex, does not have a seperate site for deals?
AU Amex has this website https://www.americanexpress.com/au/network/shopping.html. It is very easy to enrol offers by yourself.

  • Does the $195 fee count towards the $1500?
