The deal is a tad deceptive (and I don't expect anything less from Air NZ). The only date you could get a return flight was leaving AKL on the 12/3, and then leaving HNL on the 12/3 i.e taking the same plane there and back and spending 2 hours in Hawaii. Multiple one ways to HNL in March though, and multiple one ways back to AKL in Feb. Doesn't really work unless you're a time traveller though.
There are other options throughout the period I can find, but you are right, its very convenient for AirNZ - that when there is a cheap outbound flight, there is no cheap inbound, and then later on it completely reverses you can find lots of inbound cheap but no outbound. So basically there are no combination that works without paying the much higher price.
One could almost be suspicious that its by design as doesn't seem logical that it reverses like this.
Because these flights are the cheapest they have ever been, the limited seats went very very quickly. When scrappy found them and posted in the forums there were many days available at that stage. Unfortunately if you want the cheapest price you have to be fast.
Quite possibly, no way to tell for sure thou what was and wasnt available and if you think AirNZ and all airlines dont have teams of people optimising this stuff to their own benefit you are kidding yourself. I looked this morning as I got the email was in pretty quick and still had the same result, find one leg but not the other or then find the opposite but not the other etc - just very convenient is all im saying.
Nachos is right, just because there are no more flights available to give a valid return trip for that price doesn't mean they weren't there to start with.
There are heaps of comments on Air NZ/Grabaseat Facebook page saying people didn't see a single $9 available at all. I've looked many times over the last few days and see them pop up frequently.
I booked tickets with them and they are absolutely great, its just the timing. Also if someone is open to travel anytime when these deals come then he/she can save heaps.
There were lots of options chch-Honolulu this morning
At least 5 different sets of dates would have worked depending if you wanted to stay 1 week or twoCan confirm, saw multiple dates in March. Only reason I didn't but it was I couldn't afford the accommodation
8 Feb - 2 Apr 2019 for those interested.
