Couldn't you just sell anything under the sports category? Do they check?

  No they do not check normally, usually it is up to the users to recategorize items via reporting it. The only issue with purposely miscategorizing items is that there will likely be less bids.

    And if reported, they might withdraw your entire auction, which can be a hassle if you didn't save anything

      So can you initially list under a sporting category and then change to the correct category?
