Holy shit, briscoes are having a sale!

    • For 50% off, yes. Anything advertised under 50% is not worthy to be on cheapies

Briscoes make a fool out of people big time, last month Sunbeam Breadmaker cost was $120 now before the sale they increased price to $220. Consumers will now think they have got a huge deal by buying it for $110.

    • While this might be right, I do think that there are items in a 50% briscoes sale that are good bargain. You just need to do your part as a consumer and compare prices from other stores.

    • This is been a practice they[and some other companies] been doing for a while. The slap in wrist punishments from Commerce commission is not clearly not working.

      Briscoes is a big scam
They show big discounts after putting a big price tag

I went to buy a coffee plunger from my friend's gift registry and the exact same product is now $45 "50% off" when a week ago it was $25 on sale! Pissed off tbh.

    • All the products I am interested in buying were 50% off the current price on the 12th.

  • And lets see if the same pattern, next week some of the 50% items go to 60% off.

Pretty obvious. That's why it's your duty as a consumer to search for items that don't go more than 35% off.

I am sure last time they removed a whole lot of stuff from the shelves this was on and it disappeared online. Its possible that they just ran out, but suspiciously we back in the stock immediately after the "sale" . Be interesting to see if similar happens this time with same products.

that could be the case - I realized they took out Breville washing tablets, coffee machine cleaners

Yeah I went to grab a bunch of new glassware last time and found only fugly stuff available… did make me think the same thing.

    • While I don't disagree that Briscoes does a lot of dodgy things, I have strong doubt that they are actually taking stock of shelves. Not least because I don't think that sort of thing is cheap, so they could easily end up wasting more money by doing it. Especially for small poorly packed items. (A lot of glassware for example.)

I went to one of the 50% sales, and of course have been to some of their regular sales and I'm often late in the day and one the last day or similar. Their stores often look like disaster areas. I'm fairly doubtful this is because staff are removing stuff, but simply because of customers.

As for being in stock just after the sale, well IANAL nor ever run a business etc, but I'm not sure there's anything wrong with Briscoes not taking out stock they have in their store room during the sale. It would probably help if their advertising is clear e.g. they specify on shelf stock only and they may add new stock at their discretion. Of course they also have to be careful with their staff and that's probably the biggest problem. If they do have stock in their stock room but are just keeping it, their staff cannot say anything suggesting to the contrary. Mind you, they could easily and intentionally be getting deliveries of stuff they knew they were going to run out of just after the sale ends, so even it appearing in store the very next day doesn't mean they had in their stock room anyway.

As for online, well I'm less sure about that. Beyond deliveries intentionally scheduled the day after the sale ends, it's also possible they sell stock which is on the way or at the supplier but don't do so during the sale. Again this could be a bit dodge under the FTA etc, it depends what their advertising says. Frankly though, it's not hard for them to be smart about it and reduce their legal risk. For example, maybe they only sell stock which had been ordered even if it hasn't arrived. And all orders need to be manually approved. Then they just don't approve any orders of new stock during the sale and perhaps they're fine.

P.S. Briscoes stores are all also owned/run by their parent company AFAIK, not franchises. So there's less chance someone in charge will do something stupid.

  • If you want duvets, Cracker Jack is doing some decent deals. Ring ahead to see if they have stock however.

  • Weird pricing. This was only $14.99 last year

    • Think this is one of their common loss leader items they always have. "this fry pan only $14.99!!", I've seen them do some for $10 too.

What kind of sale its is. Most of the year, items are on sale.
I was thinking that, this behaviour of Briscoes should be reported to Commerce Commission. It will be good if some lawyer could take it up.

Bike Barn was fined in 2017 seems like in similar way…

  • The heater I was looking at is 50% off at $99, but it switches from $199 to $99 MULTIPLE times a month. In fact it's the same price as it was in March 2018 and many times since, so after over a year it's still the same price.

    • As above in comments.
