$34.90/30 Days for 32GB Data and Unlimited Calls and Texts @ Kogan (365 Day Plan $424)

30

If you're willing to pay for a year in advance then this works out to be pretty cheap compared to offerings from Vodafone, 2degrees or spark. I believe this is using the Vodafone network.

  • Do they allow data sharing with family members?

And does the data carry over?

It looks cheap but I really wonder if it's possible to use 32GB of mobile data in one month. I work in IT and even I don't use that much. And this is considering that I've shared my data with 5 members in my family and they all use it for basic things like Whatsapp, Facebook, Messenger, etc. Of course, they use WiFi when at home but occassionally use mobile data while on the go and even then, the combined data usage of my family doesn't even exceed 3GB per month.

    • Unless things have changed since they launched, fairly sure it's no sharing and no carryover. (Well I mean for a account. You can share via hotspot etc.)

When I was trying Kogan's 32GB plan, it was fairly easy to use I think up to 10 GB. I didn't set out to use a lot of data, but also I didn't care if I was using data.

None of what you mention is necessarily that high data usage. For the average person on mobile I expect video is most likely the biggest hit.

1080P60 uses a fair bit of data, and live streams are often worse. I'm doubtful I really notice the difference between 1080P60 and 720P30. But since I had the data, I just kept it. Okay I'm sure it resulted in a some increase in battery usage although probably not an extreme amount since I'm also sure it was doing hardware decoding. The increased mobile throughput would also have an effect I suspect, but having the screen on is probably the biggest killer and that applies whatever resolution video.

For the streamer I watch, 2 of their ~6 hours streams will likely exceed 32 GB based on when I've downloaded them at home. For live streams, this depends somewhat on the streamer since AFAIK, Twitch accepts a reasonable range and the original resolution isn't recompressed. And I'd note that for non partners on Twitch, there isn't a guarantee of streams other than the original one either.

Other than when on holiday, it's probably not so common you want to watch 6 hours in one session without Wifi, assuming you have regular broadband at home. But I'm fairly sure it's easy to spend 1-2 hours watching video on the train or bus every weekday in Auckland. (Plenty of people use 2degrees free data hour for this.)

BTW speaking of Twitch, I sometimes seemed to get very high usage even with the screen was off most of the time. I'm not sure if this was a bug or just the high amount of usage when data was on.

Still other things contribute something as well. I think video was at most 75% and possibly less of what I used. E.g. why fluff around with Burger King's or PaknSave's Wifi? Minecraft Earth needs an update? No need to wait until I'm on Wifi, not only for the Play Store update but for the 200MB data pack. Recorded a video I want to send on Hangouts? Again no need to wait until I reach home to send it even if it's 300 MB. Getting back to video again, happen to be out at 8PM but want to see the Lotto draw? No problem. It's definitely an interesting perspective when you don't worry about data.

(For the non average person, there are other stuff. E.g. want to try something with a different connection but prefer not to use a VPN? Why not hotspot your phone and use it? Want to retrieve a large file you forgot to copy from your computer while out and about? Again no problem. Although I didn't actually do these much, just thoughts that occurred.)

BTW speaking of Minecraft Earth, it actually has a fair amount of data usage if you play it a lot. (I don't mean like it will make a big dent in 32GB, but if I only had 1GB it could be a problem.) IIRC even NZ Herald seemed to somehow use 300 MB and I don't watch much video on it.

      • Thanks for sharing your experience. I guess for me and my family, we are a bit frugal. I don't see the point of paying for an internet plan AND a mobile data plan. If I'm out and about, I don't stream or watch videos or use my phone heavily. I'll only be using it for basic communication and the same is true with my family members. It's only when we're home that we use WiFi for watching movies, etc.

So for us, we're pretty good on saving on costs. At my last job, our company pays for our data and I would share it with 5 family members and that was awesome. Imagine everyone were to pay say $10~$20 each per month, that's a good $100 gone and in 12 months that's $1200. You can usually get free wifi outside and when you come home, that's what you should be using to maximize the speed and benefits of wifi. I'd rather pay for a good 1000/400 fiber plan to be honest. But even on 100/20 I'm happy, because the speed is fast enough and stable enough for everyone at home to stream and watch movies and do whatever.

  • Hi fellow Cheapies, Do they offer call waiting / forwarding etc?
