My dentist recommended this. He said very likely our kids will need them based on genetics alone of our teeth. $5 a week into a dedicated account from birth specifically for braces has grown to over $2k for our kids. Will be plenty in the pot by the time they need them. :)

I've seen heaps of deals for braces way cheaper than this. Especially GrabOne etc. And for some places (in Auckland) I've seen this price as their normal price. It's cheaper than average for sure especially comparing to Remuera orthodontists but I don't think it is really a cheapies deal. You can easily do better if you shop around. But then again do you really want braces done by the cheapest person you can find?
My 2 cents: don't let them remove (non-wisdom) teeth. We spent $30k reversing my wifes orthodontic work done when she was a teen, including implants to replace teeth. Removing teeth is lazy and irresponsible when the jaw is still growing, and often results in a retracted mandible causing arthritis in the jaw.
Glad to see this coming down in price. Dental in NZ is mental.
Other aspect to reduce should be the retainers as 3D printing becomes more accessible over time.
