  • Does anyone know if Bunnings matched/beat the metal rake?

  • The warehouse twin pack smoke alarms 10 years https://tinyurl.com/ye9yxvja

Note that the cavius ones are smaller if that matters to you.
Also you can replace the battery in the cavius ones if you know how to solder and detach tack welds.
The battery in them is a camera sized battery, can't remember exactly what size, shorter than a AAA. Got one for about $10 from camera store. Was for a coworker a while ago.. I haven't seen her in a while, hopefully all is well

      • Yes but for $10 more you can get 4

Guess it depends what the consumer values. Quality/appearance/reliability vs price.

          • @RSTH: Actually I just re-checked the price and the warehouse is selling them for $52.90 for four .And as for quality and reliability they have to meet New Zealand Fire safety standards so that won't be a problem.

@pdevonporf: I would think it's more about style/size rather than reliability.
Also heard things about false alarms on cheaper ones, can't speak for those ones though

      • It could be quite dangerous to actually keep the Smoke detector longer than 10 years as you can get fat and dust buildup on the sensors.

        • Dunno, have they done studies for 20 years on these?
I'm sure the old ones with replaceable batteries have been up longer than 10 years

          • @Foodie: Most 10-year smoke alarms do not have replaceable batteries.

            • @Avantime: Have you opened them up? These ones mentioned have standard batteries

              • @Foodie: This from New Zealand Fire services. Every 10 years
Replace all smoke alarms with new long-life photoelectric smoke alarms.

                • @pdevonporf: Yes, because the batteries run out?

I agree that you should replace after 10 years, but batteries can be replaced. Whether this is a good idea or not, I'm not sure.
If there are studies showing the degradation of the sensor then you shouldn't replace the batteries.

                  • @Foodie: The Cavius ones don't have user-accessible battery compartments, but obviously you can break them open. However their 5-year alarms, like the heat alarms, do have user-replaceable batteries. The Cavius website states that their alarms only have a lifespan of 10 years, and that's the manufacturer's certified guarantee of regulatory compliance.

As for replacing the battery of a 10-year smoke alarm, not only is it inadvisable (and potentially illegal for a rental property), 10 years later smart home technology may have advanced to a point where you'll want to do an upgrade. Penny-pinching on potentially lifesaving devices like smoke alarms is a stupid thing to do.

To be honest I would've brought the Xiaomi/Honeywell smoke alarms if they're NZ certified, as they're smart home connected.

                    • @Avantime: I don't disagree with you.
You don't have to break them open as they are held together with clips. All I'm saying is it's possible to replace the battery in the cavius ones.
Cavius sells smart ones that need a hub, not as many add-ons as xiaomi though.

                      • @Foodie: They no longer sell the hub for some reason, now it's replaced by a dumb remote.

                        • @Avantime: Was wondering why I couldn't find the hub, ended up getting a couple of Nest Protects instead

                        • @Avantime: A remote? Random.. spose it means you don't have to wait for the fire to turn them off, you can just use the remote.
