  • Thanks Wakrak didn't receive $20 yet mostly $10 and $5

  • Mostly $10

  • Spun up $20. Thanks Wakrak.

  • I don't think this was discussed very well last time but note that the TOTP they is very sensitive. So if your clock is off by more than about 1.5 minutes, you likely won't be able to spin (will get the message to try another device). This may be normal for TOTPs when used for two factor authentication, but is a bit weird for this sort of thing IMO.

(The TOTP itself is just a standard TOTP with the parameters mentioned last time. Even something like WinAuth can generate it.

When this first popped up in here, it didn’t have the totp so it was likely added to make it a bit harder for bots/scripts to generate multiple codes. Clearly, it doesn’t really make any difference.

I really hope that people would stop discussing it publicly though to not spoil it for everyone. If a ‘must’, then send a pm rather than discussing it openly. It’s bound by phone number anyway so unless you have 10 phone numbers (some of you may) then there’s not really a point to generate loads of code.

The same thing can be achieved through private browser sessions anyway albeit slower than a bot.

      • But that's my point though, their implementation is very poor since it doesn't do much in stopping bots, but it risks causing problems for normal people who just have their clock out of sync. Perhaps there is some small advantage to having the TOTP, but there's no reason to be so fussy on the time. 10-20 minutes isn't going to make much different to bots. If someone can't figure out how to generate one it means you can reuse an old one for a bit longer, but realistically it's still a lot of work, not much better than just doing it in browsers. If you can figure it out and it isn't very hard,, it does nothing.

By comparison, someone not doing anything wrong but who just happens to have their clock out of sync is left scratching their head why it doesn't work. Perhaps not so common on phones, since they're often used for generating TOTPs, but even with Windows having NTP on by default 20+ years, I wouldn't be surprised if at least 10% of people have clocks out of sync by more than 1.5 minutes. (I think this is a little simplistic anyway, I didn't test it very well but believe a future TOTP is rejected faster then a past TOTP.)

        • Completely agree with you. My comment was more about people openly sharing deeper technical details that could potentially can this promotion forever.

There are far more better and simpler ways to stop bots/spam but I guess being it an external api, they have limited options and that ~10% of people who have their clocks wrong is a risk they’re willing to take.

        • I would have to disagree with you claim that at 10% of users have out of sync clocks. All modern day phones and OSes have NTP configured by default. Extremely few people set the time on their phones and computers manually. Nowadays, only wall and car clocks tend to be out of sync.

          • +1

@obfuscated: But I acknowledged that "but even with Windows having NTP on by default 20+ years". And although maybe this wasn't so clear in my comment, I intended to exclude phones ("Perhaps not so common on phones"), only referring to desktops and laptops. NTP being on by default doesn't mean it's working or didn't somehow get disabled. Especially in offices, but also with the large number of poorly maintained home computers. If someone is using a Windows 7 computer which lost support over a year ago, probably with who knows what crap installed, and plenty of people are doing that, don't be so sure NTP is working.

If the clock is too far out of sync, it can cause problems for various encryption stuff, most isn't sensitive to 1.5 minutes, or even 10 minutes. TOTP is one of the few things which generally is. But although I use WinAuth myself for some things, in practice very few people generate TOTP on their desktop and laptop computers. (They may input the TOTP on their desktop, but unless the implementation is very very poor, the server should not care what your local clock is. Well I guess a small number could take it into account in a helpful way i.e. accept both real time and your computer's time although that seems to have major security implications since anyone could just fake it to use an old TOTP code, so probably not.)

So unlike with phones, most people aren't going to care if their desktop or laptop computer is 1.5 minutes out of sync. (Provided their time zone is set correctly and DST is enabled, DST adjustment should still happen automatically, NZ hasn't had a change in a while now. Even XP got the NZ DST update.)

In other words, while I have zero actual evidence, I also think there's zero real evidence or reason to assume the number is less than 10%. Definitely I don't think any developer should be making such assumptions, especially not if there's no reason why they need to require such precise synchronisation. (If there is a reason, then you should consider this possibility and make sure you provided sufficient clear help messages for such people.) IMO way too many developers make assumptions based only on what they are used to and expect which tend to be well maintained fairly new & fast computers, with no real attempt to consider or find out what's out there beyond their bubble. (Perhaps not the best word in our current circumstances but can't think of an alternative.) Well the same for phones too.

BTW as an aside, phones sometimes synchronise by the network (NITZ) not NTP. (I believe Android generally prefers NITZ, but will use NTP if it hasn't had a NITZ update in a while or is not working.) NITZ was used before many phones could do NTP i.e. before the touch screen smart phone era.

I'll continue to post these occasionally on here. Alternatively, flick me a PM and I'll share a few codes per person.

    • thanks, got one from your last post, much appreciate it!

    • +13

Phew, it's like a full-time job with so many PMs. I'll get through them eventually.

    • I was going to PM you, but figured you’d have so many already, and didn’t want to add to your inbox - awesome gesture :)

      • It's settled down now. Should reply with codes quickly now.

Remember everyone to SUPPORT THIS KIWI BUSINESS - in chch at least the regular fuel price at Waitomo seems consistently cheaper than BP/Z even after maximizing your smartfuel/pumped savings. Plus the stations are all contactless!

    • Yup take all your ICE cars & Bikes and fill em to the max, so we can continue getting discounts from them.

    • +1

Yes Waitomo prices are always cheapest in Chch

  • -1

Don't post codes here, it seems they are invalidated very quickly

    • +3

Not sure why people are downvoting my comment. There is no way there are enough people using the codes, and there are many comments saying they are all "gone".

If you look back to the first promotion. I was the one giving out all the codes. Some of which apparently had waitomo accounts cancelled.

      • also giving out your phone number might be a bit risky, plus if someone really wanted to be an ahole they could just send you a $5 code which means you wont be eligible for any higher amount

  • Apologies if this has been asked before but is there a minimum spend to redeem these codes?

  • if anyone has $20 or $10 can you put on 02885122332 and 02885121104, Cheers

  • Can anyone spare a $20? 0226961237 and 0226223782… please and thankyou!

  • Anyone kindly share a code, span a few hundred times without luck.

  • +1

Hey if anyone could pm me a code or 5 that'd be amazing 🙏 feel I might be a bit late to the race though - Massive thank you to Toeler for sorting me out!!

Note: If you try yourself too much your browser fingerprint will get "blacklisted" and you'll only get $5 codes, even if you click on a link for a $20 code.
If that happens, just use a different browser/device.

  • I’m getting this message.

    Waitomo
    Something's broken. Stink!
