Saw someone talking on reddit about the deals on offer. I'm not sure if they also offer the deals for people on monthly plans or just prepay.
Mine were 3GB for 3 days Offpeak data(7pm-7am) for $2.50 and 500 Voda-Voda calling minutes for 7 days for free. Might be of use to some people.
I've received free data in the past. Only got a Voda sim so I could get free shipping @ The Market. They have decent rewards now and then too. Got cheapish tickets to Crowded House when they came to Hamilton thanks to Voda.
I checked my 9 sim cards
4 of them were 500 mins for free ($0)
5 of them were 5gigs data for 7 days for free ($0)

True, in 2010 2Degrees has a 'text me race' promo where you had to txt a 2D sim from Spark or Voda 10000+ times to win a IDEOS phone(that you could resell for ~$200 on TM and make a healthy profit) and they had no limits on how many phones you could win.
Basically the way the mobile networks worked it was profitable for 2D to receive the messages and cover the costs of the phones via the service fees iirc. I and many others won alot of phones before the ChCh quake ended the 2nd promo early to reduce mobile network load.
