.Com Domain Transfer (Incl 1 Year Renewal) US$6.75 (~NZ$9.87) (Normally US$8.58, and from September US$9.13) @Porkbun.com

ALLABOARD

.Com Domain price will go up from 1 September 2021 from US$8.58 to US$9.13 as a result of Verisign increased their wholesale price.

Applying coupon ALLABOARD when checkout will bring down the price from US$8.58 to US$6.75 which was about NZ$9.87 (as of yesterday afternoon FX Rate)
The price includes 1 year renewal on top of the existing period of your domain (I believe this is market standard).

I own several .Com domain names expiring end of this year, so I decided to renew before price goes up next month and found the cheapest one with a good reputation.
I think this is quite a good deal since this registrar includes free SSL and email forwarding too (of course, also whois privacy and DNS as almost all other registrars do)
The company review seems good on Trustpilot. (https://www.trustpilot.com/review/porkbun.com)

Please note:
It looks like the coupon code can only be used once per account. So if you have many domains to transfer I recommend you to attempt transferring all your domain names at once and applying this coupon. I did transfer one first and then regret later. :(

Upfront specials are always good (eg, lots of places will do $1 initial registration).

However, once renewal comes up, switch to Cloudflare. They charge at cost. So my last renewal was $8.03USD.

They aren't out to make any money on domains, preferring to sell you other services as you need them. Eg I pay another $5/m to them for Load Balancing but get far more value than that out of them on domain savings, their free CDN (I cname an S3 bucket, which results in CloudFlare caching my public images and reducing the impressions on AWS) as well as all of their other free services (including time saved, such as the 15 year origin SSH cert I have to my server, then their free public certs which they maintain).

They also support DNSSEC, which a lot of registrars still don't do, and automatically apply domain privacy.

The only drawback is they don't yet do ALL of the domains, so I have to keep my .hk, .nz, and .co.nz domains with another, more expensive registrar.

    • Oh, they also only transfer, they don't do initial registrations. So you have to register them somewhere else first, then transfer them to CloudFlare later.

A good example is my .ltd domain I initially registered with CrazyDomains.

      Renewal will be $25.60NZD ($18USD).

Transferring to CloudFlare will be $14USD.

However if I want all record types with CrazyDomains, such as TXT records, I have to pay another $26NZD per year.
      Domain Privacy? Another $10/year
      DNSSEC? CrazyDomains doesn't have it.

All of which are free on CloudFlare.

    • Thanks for sharing. That's good to know if the price at Cloudflare is always the cost. I would take a look and try when my next domain renewal comes.
since my concern this time was only .COM domain and the transfer price after discount is lower than the cost which makes it great deal :)

btw yea, It's unfortunate that not many registrars with good pricing offers .co.nz or .nz. I will also have to find somewhere else for my .co.nz

  • So this coupon doesn't seem to work for for initial registration. Only transfering?
