Whats the benefit of this? I host my videos in a shared usb drive via my router and use vlc on my phone to chromecast it to my tv. What does plex do differently or better?
First of it will index n arrange all videos if they are movies/tvshows and present you a nice layout. Something like Netflix. Secondly you don't need the phone to cast it. Just use the plex app on any device and play it from anywhere (even outside your home if you setup port forward). It can also transcode the file based on the device so that you don't get buffering. Plex also has its own free library of movies //tvshows / live tv etc. Easy sharing and can setup profiles(restrictions apply for like kids can only see some libraries). You can also have music library and can consume it outside as well if you don't have any subscriptions.
Lots of other benefits but only if you have local content.
