They were selling this for $1495 on black friday.

    • precisely, this.Pbtech is always scummy.

    • It's still a good deal for 1.6k, don't you think?

  • Well, is it a good deal? It's a weirdly spec'd laptop. LED lights i.e. Gaming. But only a 1650 as we head into 2022, with 32GB [overkill] Ram.

I'd much rather have a better graphics card with 16GB Ram.

In Australia [OzB], the deals are unfortunately significantly better for lappy's. Get a 3060 with this price, and 16GB Ram, with better build quality to boot.

    • But only a 1650

Depends on what you're after I guess. I'm not after a gaming laptop. Need one with 32gig RAM for programming mainly.

Yeah keeping an eye on OZB too. None except Dell and Lenovo store ships to NZ unfortunately

  • It might have been cheaper on Black Friday, but I'm not sure how it impacts on whether this is a good deal or not? Perhaps only that it might be cheaper again later, but that is true of just about every laptop on the market?

For me, I would lose all the graphics capability and take the 32GB RAM any day - unless you are buying a toy to play with, why would graphics matter?

For me, the real downside of this is HP. They load such a lot of crap onto their laptops - you have to spend time getting it out and that is always a risk too.

You can try wiping and re-installing with a clean Win10 install, but then you ruin the risk of having to spend time finding drivers.

    Alan.

    • Yeah same. Me too. 32 GB is a big selling point for me and GTX 1650 isn't a big deal for me seeing as I don't play games

    • I bought this at the original Black Friday price to use as my work laptop (the one provided struggles to just use teams) and it absolutely cranks for that, like massively overkill. I've since also been using it for gaming and had no issues playing New World, The Division 2, etc, on settings that look pretty good. I rate it.

      • Sorry to hear that. Overkill for programming? What kind of work

  • i got an acer gaming laptop back in April for $1402 that included shipping has a GTX 1650 ti 4gb ddr5 and but only duel channel 16gb ram

    and has a i7-9750H

most games on high at 1080p could not reach 144fps

    • more than 16 gb RAM?

      • mine has 2x 8gb ram sticks

        • I'm about to pull the trigger on this one since I'm not into gaming and I don't care much for graphics capabilities. You think this is a good deal for Ryzen5 32GB RAM?

          • @upbeat: is an ok deal but if you don't really need the graphics capabilities you can get a laptop just as good for less but it depends on what you will do on the laptop

            • @Gooddeal69: Python scripting, using docker, etc. No graphic rendering, not playing games (not even solitaire)

            • @Gooddeal69:

Please can you post a link to what you are thinking of? Matching the 32GB of RAM is quite difficult I had thought, but even with 16GB RAM, similar processor, and similar SSD, what would be cheaper?

              Thanks,

              Alan.

                What are your thoughts on

                https://www.dell.com/en-nz/shop/laptop-notebook-computers/in…

                https://www.lenovo.com/nz/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-e-ser…

There is a $200 ish difference ($1,500 / $,1690) between them, so hard to go past the Dell, even though Lenovo and Surface Pro would be my two preferred brands.

I would upgrade the SSD to 1TB for an extra $90 myself. Not sure if you can do that with the Lenovo, but I would assume the $200 differential would remain anyway?

Can you tell if either would allow for RAM expansion? If they come with, say, 2 x 8GB, can you replace those with, say, 2 x 16GB later?

                • @Alan6984: sorry i'm not too sure as i never really do that.

Personally, I dont see the point of spending more money, spending personal time, being anxious if it will turn out alright, assuming more risk, creating potential for damage and possibly voiding warranty. But to each his own. YMMV

I've been keeping an eye on these

I do agree - it would need to be 'undo these two screws to expose the memory modules, pop them out, slot in the new ones, close, and do up the screws'.

Anything involving removing the keyboard or screen or anything other than the actual memory strips I would not go near!

I like the look of the ThinkPad E14 Gen2, but I would likely spend a little more for a faster processor and to get Win10 Pro (upgradeable to Win11 Pro) as I still occasionally setup clients' Windows Domains for them and it is convenient to join my laptop to the nascent Domain to get it setup, then leave before I pass it over to the client (however, been a while now, so maybe not worth the extra $50 (in theory) for a Pro license):

                    $1,669 — https://www.lenovo.com/nz/en/p/20TA002WAU

          • @upbeat: I have been seriously thinking about it too - it would replace my seven year old (2014) Surface Pro 3 (i7 @ 3.3GHz, 8GB RAM, 512 GB SSD).

Whilst this looks like a good deal to me, the problem I am having is that it is:

            • Ryzen 5 (3.3GHz so no direct gain, but I suspect still faster overall - I am no hardware expert so not entirely sure)

            • 32GB RAM (Massive gain for me - I regularly get memory constrained / out of memory in large Excel models I have from clients)

            • 512GB SSD (Same as I already have)

The memory is the only thing, and that is likely the one thing I really need to increase, but it feels like I am paying $1,600 for the extra memory alone.

            Alan.

            • @Alan6984: Have you had a look at Lenovo store. It's got quite a few nice models too but not a huge discount nor anything more than 16gb RAM

              • @upbeat: I have had a look - I could not find a way to actually configure what I wanted (specifically 16GB+ RAM) - maybe I missed it, but the memory options did not come up for me?

            • @Alan6984:

The memory is the only thing, and that is likely the one thing I really need to increase,

Yeah same and not a huge fan of hp. I like Lenovo and dell

              • @upbeat: Me too - plus MS Surface Pro :-)

I used to be absolutely anti-Dell (say, up to about 2005), then I came around to their desktops and laptops, but still stayed away from their servers, up to about 2010. Since then I have had no problem with Dell at all (even bought a Dell server for myself about eight years ago), until literally the last few months, I have seen a few people saying that Dell laptops (specifically laptops - no comments on desktops or servers) have fallen in build quality, but that is purely hear-say from individuals, rather than objective reviews from professional sites. Still - makes me a little nervous though.

Do you have any recent (say, last year or so) experience with Dell laptops?

                • @Alan6984: I've had only dell laptops so far. Haven't had major issues except charging port issue. Been using 3 dell laptops in the past ten years. Have had Lenovo at work thinkpad. Had one hp too

  • I think I'm going to go for the Dell that UpBeat found above (but with the 1TB SSD for an extra NZ$90):

    https://www.dell.com/en-nz/shop/laptop-notebook-computers/in…

    • Price = $1,590
    • Processor = i7-11390H - 11th Generation Intel Core (12MB Cache, up to 5.0GHz)
    • RAM = 16GB (2x8GB, DDR4, 3200MHz)
    • Storage = 1TB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD
    • Win10 Pro (Free upgrade to Win11 - think I'll go for it immediately!)
    • Warranty = 1Y In-Home Hardware Service (Not great, but not unusual)

    Negatives:
    - McAfee® Live Safe 30day Trial

    Uncertainty:

The blurb says the 'Ports' include:

    1 USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C™ with DisplayPort™ and Power Delivery for i5 processor (Thunderbolt 4 for i7 processor)

Does anyone know what they means if I bought the i7?
Do you get the Thunderbolt 4 as well as the USB-C with PD, or instead of?

    Thanks,

    Alan.

    • It's 100 $ lesser if you choose the 512 mb version

I've still not decided. I'm going for of the Lenovo ones this time

      https://www.dell.com/en-nz/shop/laptop-notebook-computers/in…

Make sure to talk to chat support to get lower price.

Idk why you'd prefer dell over Lenovo that costs almost the same for similar specs

      • if you use the site swagbucks like i do you can get a 2% cash back so you would get $28.78 cash back

        • -1

I don't see Dell on there?

      • I think the closest Lenovo I could find was this:

        $1,670 = https://www.lenovo.com/nz/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-e-ser…

However, it is only the 512GB SSD, so to make them comparable, let's add the same amount as for Dell = $90 bringing the Lenovo to $1,760.

Difference is therefore about $180, but for me, the extra storage is very useful, and I 'amortise' the $90 over 60 months (maybe useable life) it comes to about $1.50 per month to double the storage. For me that's worth it, but I don't see an option to do that with the Lenovo - please do correct me if I am wrong on that.

Not much I grant you. I haven't bought it yet so still time to revert to the Lenovo…..

        • They're sturdy so i'd rather pay the extra cost to get a Lenovo than dell TBH. Did you apply the voucher holidays in Lenovo cart

          • @upbeat: I think so - it says:

            Web Price = $2,429.00
            After Instant Savings = $2,186.10
            After eCoupon = $1,669.00

            inc. GST & delivery

I believe the 'eCoupon' is 'HOLIDAYS'.

Did you see any way to swap out the 512GB SSD for a 1TB SSD on the Lenovo?

  • +1

Just my opinion, I have lenovo ThinkPad 14inch and dell 14 from work. Both intel i5 previous generation, 8gb ram on both. I will choose lenovo anytime. I find it better overall.

    • once you go bl.. err lenovo, you never go back

      • Lol.. I know what you mean haha.

Amazon AU has some good deals for laptops, not sure how you will go with any support/warranty issues though.
    examples
    $697 i5 Lenovo cheapie - https://www.amazon.com.au/Lenovo-IdeaPad-i5-10210U-Platinum-…
    $1347 - i5 RTX3050 Asus - https://www.amazon.com.au/ASUS-Gaming-Laptop-15-6-FX506HCB-H…
    $1497 - Ryzen 7 RTX3050Ti Asus - https://www.amazon.com.au/ASUS-Strix-15-6-Gaming-Notebook/dp…
    $2023 - i7 RTX3070 Asus - https://www.amazon.com.au/ASUS-Dash-Gaming-15-6-Notebook/dp/…

i'd personally just find a great deal and upgrade the ram if i wanted 32gb instead of trying to find a 32gb model out there which limits your options massively.

    • Upgrading laptop RAM can often be non-trivial, and that's setting aside where it is soldered in!

However, the general point is valid.

The ASUS ROG Strix G513IE-HN004W is tempting - just not sure about purchasing from Amazon.
