Came across this deal when looking for a laptop for my son for school.

To get the price

  • customize laptop and remove Windows 10
  • Popup will appear offering a 10% discount for new users
  • Signup

$899.00 - $259.00 (OS) - $64 (10%) = $576

Specifications

  • AMD Ryzen™ 3 5300U
  • 4GB DDR4
  • 256GB SSD M.2

The amount of RAM isn't ideal, but it does come with a spare SO-DIMM slot so can be upgraded. Unfortunately with the 5300U there isn't an option to upgrade the soldered RAM to 8GB. To access the 8GB option you need to upgrade the CPU to the 5500U.

Don't forget to upgrade the Wi-fi to 11.ax, its a free upgrade from 11.ac

Obviously you'll need to source an operating system, I'll leave that up to your imagination.

          • @upbeat: Never had a laptop fail or go wrong, so didn't bother with the warranty. Hardware is generally fairly reliable and it's trivial to fix software.

          • @upbeat: Well i expect a laptop to last a min of 3 years. So the CGA would cover me.

            • @tripp: @tripp, @felixfurtak @fatboyj I have only had experience with dell so far. It's wasn't a good experience with their customer service. They didn't honour it to fix the charging port issue that arose 13 months after purchase @Alan6984 so I bought Lenovo premium support to be on the safer side. How long are we covered under CGA after purchase?

              • @upbeat: You are covered for a period that a 'reasonable consumer' would consider acceptable :-)

It is deliberately not explicitly defined - each item has to be considered based on what it is, how much it costs etc:

                Have a read:

                https://www.consumerprotection.govt.nz/general-help/consumer…

Note: If you bought a laptop for business use, it would probably NOT be covered by the CGA (might depend on the T&Cs) as businesses can agree in writing that the CGA doesn't apply if personal or household products are bought for business use. When I ran a wholesale business, we used to always explicitly make it a condition of sale that the purchaser was purchasing 'in-trade', and we declined sales to individuals for personal use, so that we could always exclude the CGA (plus we didn't really want to deal with selling one item at a time - too expensive to act like a retailer).

                Alan.

                • @Alan6984: Let's say the charging port malfunctions after 12 months like what happened in my Dell one, how do I confront them when Dell declines my claim

                  • @upbeat: Assuming it's not user damage(ie you pressing down on the charging port causing it to break off the board or cracking the shell case/housing).

You say the CGA covers goods for a reasonable period of time which you would expect to be atleast 3 years for even an entry level laptop(or longer for a premium priced laptop like high end macbooks). If they decline there is the Disputes Tribunal which will cost $45 for under 2k value and $90 for over 2k and a few hours of your time. You prepare a case, ie it's handy to point out the same manufacturer might offer a 2 year warranty in the EU if that applies or printouts from the Consumer NZ site about how long a laptop should last. If you can find evidence(ie forum posts) that the malfunction has happened to a number of others it can be used to say the goods are not fit for purpose(ie I had a Dell laptop screen hinge fail and did this finding ~30 posts about the exact same issue, after they heard I had this documented they folded right away on a 2.5yr old laptop that cost $1500).

Generally a retailer will resolve it before any DT hearing because it's will can cost them hundreds if they go down that path having a rep there.

                    • @Dunno: Yeah dell charging port issue is the most common issue faced by users as per Google. It stopped charging out of nowhere, had to wiggle and find the right angle to charge but if I continue wiggling, it'll damage the port. Mine was i7 for which I paid 1.1k

              • @upbeat: That is a seriously shoddy response from Dell with a hardware issue, if it was a laptop you bought overseas then that could be a problem to get fixed but if it was Dell NZ then you could have torn them a new A for that response. I can see why you got the 3 year warranty and for an extra $100 that's good peace of mind for two years.
But if any NZ company refuses to repair just outside the warranty period ALWAYS ask to escalate the case, lackluster customer service hate that line. And quote the CGA and basically don't take no for an answer.

                • @fatboyj: It was from Dell nz, didn't buy overseas

                  • @upbeat: Ultimately, if they absolutely refuse to comply with the CGA, you can take them to the Disputes Tribunal (limit is, I believe, $15,000 or $20,000 if both parties agree to that), so it easily covers your $1,100 laptop.

You pay a small fee (might be $80 or something - you'd have to check), and you appear along with the other party. Neither party can have a lawyer to represent them (although you could consult and get advice from one before attending if you wanted to).

If you win, the DT will order Dell to pay over whatever they determine to be a fair amount.

There are very limited grounds for appeal.

Read up on it if you are interested - I really enjoyed myself going through the DT (it might have helped that I won $11,000 perhaps). Mine was nothing to do with the CGA - it was a commercial dispute:

                    https://www.consumerprotection.govt.nz/general-help/how-to-c…

                    Alan.

                    • @Alan6984: The levels of claim in the Disputes Tribunal have been streamlined in the last few years and it no longer matters whether both parties agree or not.

You can now claim up to $30,000.
                      Fees are as follows:

                      Less than $2000 = $45
                      $2000 - $4999 = $90
                      $5000 - $30,000 = $180

Here is the link to the updated forms and fees

                      • @bigcheese: Thanks - it was probably about six years ago when I was at the DT. Good to know they increase the limits periodically.

I highly recommend it if you are pretty sure you are in the right and the other party is not playing ball :-)

Also, it might be fun to look up the home addresses of each of the directors (Companies Office website) and send a copy of your filing to each of them (as well as the registered office of the company - that is a 'must do') - no harm, and might mean they just kick some minion who is being recalcitrant and Dell NZ just send you a cheque.

                    • @Alan6984: @Alan6984 Wow. 11k that's a lot of money. Is that claim for an electronic device as well?

send a copy of your filing to each of them (as well as the registered office of the company - that is a 'must do')

Won't that cost a lot of money to courier to each of the registered office along with CGA cost and DT cost, if it gets to that?

                      • @upbeat: Hi Upbeat,

Wow. 11k that's a lot of money. Is that claim for an electronic device as well?

No - this was a commercial dispute about product that was stolen and who was responsible.

send a copy of your filing to each of them (as well as the registered office of the company - that is a 'must do')

Won't that cost a lot of money to courier to each of the registered office along with CGA cost and DT cost, if it gets to that?

You don't need to do that as well - sending it to the registered office is sufficient (what is a signature required courier? $5? $10?) Current DT cost from what BigCheese posted above is $45 so $55 all up? I can't recall, but maybe the DT sends it to the other party, in which case it may already be covered in the $45 fee.

What is the CGA cost you are referring to?

                        Alan.

  • LOL rang this morning and an hour later get the dispatched email. Thinking oh yea only way this is done is by hassling but here we are got a good few orders getting shipped.
Last laptop I bought was 10 years ago, super excited at the legion pro, a beast of a machine for the price. Over budget and over weight by a kilo but thats for a problem for my lap to worry about.

    • Well for the price (almost 1k off) I'm a little happy as well, i do currently have a 2 year old gaming laptop with a RTX2070 however its from a smaller manufacturer that has awful support and it's almost impossible to find updated drivers/firmware/bios for it.

  • Mine turned up this morning, had a quick look (have not powered it on etc). Work is busy so will need to set it up this weekend. Just need to transfer everything from the old machine. Might also blast it back to windows 10 or patch the task bar / start on windows 11 to work like windows 10.

  • Thanks guys, got my laptop. Holy shit, it's the heaviest laptop and heaviest charger I've used in ten years but to be fair, I've never owned a gaming laptop

  • Happy to say the laptop arrived just an hour ago. What a beautiful marvel of technology. My greatest thanks to OP for posting the deal and a very hard hi five to Wakrak for being the beast of a poster on this forum and posting the cuponz coupon.

  • Mine is expected to ship tomorrow. Hopefully it does, I've been eager for it to arrive. expected delivery is 7th April.. maybe it's coming from Hong Kong like @upbeat

  • Is anyone else's legion overheating already within one week of delivery?

    • No way it should be overheating already (I am guessing you are using it 'normally' with good airflow etc etc).

I suggest contacting Lenovo and ask for it to be swapped.

      Alan.

    • Are you sure it's overheating? Those things are supposed to get hot and blow it out the rear. What is the CPU temp, what makes you think it is overheating?

  • Now $480 with code AUTUMNNZ

    • wow

    • Hi Wakrak,

If you don't mind me asking, where did you find that code? I can't find anything about it currently (quick Google search, so I freely admit I might have missed something).

Do you know what it actually does (for example, 10% off)?

      Thanks,

      Alan.

      • same here

      • I posted it as a deal earlier tonight but didn’t know enough about it so I unpublished it.

I originally saw AUTUMNAU on OzBargain and thought AUTUMNNZ would be a code, but (in hindsight) it didn’t work because I was in the Lenovo education store at the time. Then noticed that Cuponation had AUTUMNNZ listed as a code. Tried again on the normal store and success!

        It gives 25% off.

        • CupONation says it is 25% off 'accessories' - is that correct (if you know) or does it work on actual laptops?

If you aren't sure, no worries - I will give it a spin tomorrow and see what happens.

          • @Alan6984: Unsure. It worked on some but not others. There’s also codes MARCHMANIA & NZSALE but they seem to be item specific.

          • @Alan6984: Yea, I was just looking at it as well.

I do feel like this is a great deal.

I want to take a look right now at all the products to see what this code does

Also what laptops can the os be removed.

            • @Bill: Just ended up getting one, don't really need one too bad, which is why I didn't get the original deal, but this just seemed too good. The OP deal isn't even that much of a deal, it is just their normal price since everything online has an 10% off discount applied. With CUPONZ code that really just takes an extra maybe 7% off. This takes an extra 15% off and most importantly this can also have the os removed. Not many seem to allow this, which limits options quite a bit. Hope I don't have to pay Microsoft ever again.

              same thing as Huntakillaz
but in abyss blue and $60 cheaper.

I was torn on whether to go with their 8gb selectable ram or buy it cheaper myself and put it in. Ended up deciding it's not worth the extra $20 bucks.

I didn't do an extremely thorough search, their website is really poor. Other than the IdeaPads I don't think it is applicable to other laptops.

Feel kind of sorry for everyone who bought earlier. 20% restocking fee is BS

              • @Bill: Also applies to the legion's, although they get a 30% discount for some reason

Still not as good as the price with CUPONZ code by the looks of it.

  • I'm looking at the IdeaPad Slim 3 Gen 6 15" AMD
    With 5500u for $712.50
Any other options I should look at? (Want min 6 core and 16gb ram)

  • It shipped on March 26th
It processed twice in the same dhl facility in East China.
The first time it was quick, the second time it got put on hold for a day. Then it flew to Hong Kong and processed there. Currently it is now in Singapore, on hold yet again for 2 days.

  • Anyone know where to get the missing sata adapter on the mainboard?
