  • I used to get my contact lenses out of America from lens.com.
It was heaps cheaper than getting it in NZ.
Not sure how it compares these days - had laser on my eyes 3 years ago and never needed them again!

    • Hey, thinking to do laser too (got tired of changing glasses every 3-4 years or so). How much was it back then and where did you do it? Any undesirable side effects?

      • My laser was done at Fendalton Eye Clinic in Christchurch.
They are very professional and would recommend them in a heart beat. You can do a free consultation to see if you are suitable which is worth doing and I believe they also do finance.
I had a laser procedure called SMILE which is for the correction of short sightedness (myopia) and astigmatism.
The cost has not changed since I had it done - $3450 per eye, so $6900 all up. All their other laser treatments are the same price and the treatment you get will depend on what correction is required for you.

The SMILE procedure is minimally invasive - in fact the laser itself is literally only 30 seconds or so per eye and I needed no eye patches or anything afterwards.
The following day I had 20/20 vision.

I had no side effects at all other than a little bit of dry eyes which you put drops in daily for a few weeks after to help with healing.

  • Hey what are the odds. I was looking at Fendalton Eye Clinic’s website today as it’s the closest to where I gravitate for work and the kids’ school (around Burnside). Plus I really like the New World there. Yup it seems that they do 18 months interest-free now (comes to around $90 per fortnight for a $7k treatment) which I’m seriously considering.

I guess the other option is to do the lasik procedure overseas (e.g Thailand or Malaysia) which might save me thousands but would be horrible if there were complications or so.

    • I wouldn't consider overseas for that very reason.
You might save some money in the short term but this is an irreversible procedure on your vision - not worth the risk.

The treatment includes all followup which from memory was something like the following day, then a month later, then 3 months or so.
If they need to do additional laser work for the next 12 months (as in they didn't correct enough) then this is also covered.

You may as well do the free assessment and find out if it's right for you.
