  • Annoying my local one isn't listed. I think because it optometrist is only parttime from another store.

FYI that AA members get a free eye test at specsavers every 2 years: https://www.specsavers.co.nz/special-offers/aa

If you're not an AA member this looks a reasonable deal

    • Pretty sure youcan get one if you're with Southern Cross too

SX is with opsm. Free every year.

    • what does comprehensive cover?
Mine is the same bu charges $60 extra for scanning etc

And then get your new specs from Zenni

    • I never bought glasses but its getting that way from too much time on the ps5. So what price difference we talking between the two?

      • +2

I got prescription sunglasses for ~$90 NZD including shipping. The polarized tint was more expensive than the frame or the prescription lenses.

I got the exact frame as my sunglasses with prescription lenses (but not tinted) for ~$60 NZD delivered.

I got a cheaper frame with prescription lenses for ~$37 NZD delivered.

So for the price on one pair of "cheap" Specsavers glasses, I got 3 pairs and one was tinted.

+1 - search for "Zenni" on this site for past discussions, well worth a look.

Is this from ordering on zennioptical.com, then shipping to NZ?

          • +1

@trisanh: Yep…. Use the app thou it can take your PD measurement by using your camera depending on the frames and script.

            • @Dan Baker: Anyone know if this might be compatible with Southern Cross cover?

              • +1

@JedEnzed: I have SC as well. The glasses were cheap enough (for me) that I didn't even think to claim from SC.

You can always contact SC and ask if they'll cover prescriptions that were fulfilled overseas if you can prove it wasn't just fashion glasses.

              • +1

@JedEnzed: They are 20%-25% of the cost of getting them made in NZ.

I would bother getting them reimbursed.

Dunno if Southern Cross will reimburse, if I was paying for Southern Cross and they reimburse I wouldn't be using Zenni.

              • +1

@JedEnzed: Southern Cross will pay for Zenni glasses - they just need the receipt that shows the script for the glasses, which Zenni provides.

        • Polarized sunglasses are amazing for driving. Wouldn't go back to normal tints.

Zenni is great. There are quite a few others too with similar mail order busines models, EyeBuyExpress for example.

Top tip is go into an optometrist and try on a few pairs until you find a fit that your happy with. Then take note of the code on the arm of the glasses. This is the code that will help you get the perfect fit at Zenni.

Basically the three numbers relate to lens size, bridge size and arm length l. This is all you need really, together with your prescription and PD. Take a few PD measurements with different apps or fet someone to measure for you.

          • @felixfurtak: The only thing to note with polarized sunglasses is that you will see patterns if your back window is also polarized (or other cars on the roads have polarized back windows).

I have a polarized tinted inner visor for my motorcycle helmet and I can't wear my sunglasses on the bike because the patterns obstruct my view enough that I don't feel safe.

Nothing to do with Zenni specifically, just my ignorance when I bought online.

If you have the same prescription for both eyes and a reasonable IPD, you can even get specs from AliExpress for ~$5-10. I keep 2 pairs as spares, one in the car and one in the bag.

    • Should be a deal in its own right

  • I have never had issues with eyesight before nor that I wear any prescription glasses. I guess it would still be recommended to do just like any other regular health checkup? Or is it only for getting a prescription glasses number?

    • +1

Worth doing. They take pictures (for future comparison) and take measurements and give a general eye health exam.

    • Totally worth it! I've been in recently as I had a red eye I wanted to get looked at (unrelated to this deal), now I'm going back for a Glaucoma test tomorrow and found out I have astigmatism. I would never had known otherwise as I would still pass my driving test.

      • I might as well go to spec savers.Vision centre will charge me an additional $60 for the comprehensive test.
