Asus Vivobook Pro OLED 2.8k 90hz i5-11300H 8GB RAM 256GB SSD NZ$784.66 Delivered @ Newegg

NYFPC3582NZL

Found this deal over on OzBargain - with shipping it comes to $784 to NZ, including GST.

Killer deal for an OLED screen laptop. The equivalent laptop appears to be around $1700nzd from places like PBTech - albeit they only appear to sell the Ryzen model in NZ.

Cons = the non-upgradable RAM and some indicate that there can be lower battery life. Still given the price, well and truly worth it.

I feel like the only good thing about it is oled. Everything else is like mediocore.

For webbrowsing, basic tasks it'll be fine. But anything else, you'll struggle. Now even using it for basic tasks, it doesnt feature a touch screen (it helps alot) or a 360 flip. Also I can't imagine the battery life being that good either since they cheaped out on everything.

You're better off spending a few hundred more to secure something for many years to come.

Sure but how much does what you suggest cost vs this ~$850 deal(have to buy a nz charger too). Many casual users just watch youtube/stream netflix etc which these specs are more than good enough for.

OLED for casual users is useless anyway, screen burn in is an issue(ie the taskbar being in the same spot for extended periods of use) if you don't take software steps to mitigate it.

Yeah if its just for streaming or whatever then its fine. But I cant imagine it being good value long term. They cheaped out on alot of specs.
You could honestly get more value out of a macbook air which will have a much longer life span & battery life. The screen on those are pretty nice too.

        • This device is really only suitable for a very limited set of users - those who only do light tasks on their laptops, binge Netflix and care about the deep blacks while watching on the go. This thing's too bulky to carry around as a second device, unlike a tablet.

For everyone else just get a competent laptop and watch Netflix on the LCD screen. Chances are you aren't watching movies on your laptop in darkness, where the OLED shines with the deep blacks.

          • @Avantime: That limited set of users is most people. Heck I'd recommend a Chromebook as a better laptop for typical usage patterns.

This won't work for you if you want to play AAA games from the last 5 years, or want to do something computationally intensive such as video editing, programming or CAD work.

For Internet browsing, watching videos, writing documents, which is all 90% of people use a laptop for, this will be fine

I use Linux / Ubuntu on my t450 s ThinkPad which I got from USA for 170 nzd with shipping many years ago works fantastic for basic machine which you can almost do everything if your flexible everything is possible

Ubuntu imo is very good for productivity

      • Oh I don't doubt it.
However the problem you face with the t450's is, its thick and bulky, battery and screen colours arent great compared to OP's OLED screen.
OS's are all the same if all you're doing is streaming and webbrowsing, so I didn't bias my argument off that.

I'm a windows user, would never touch a mac. However, I still recommend it for people who aren't as techy and want a long term device.

Power button next to delete key…annoying if you accidentally hit that.

    • Laptop "Im going to shutdown now, you sure you dont want to save your work?"

should be possible to disable it, but yeah really stupid design or oversight :D

  • Do you pay inport tax on top of this?

TBH I wouldn't recommend a 8GB anything at this stage 16GB has become the new standard IMO.

    • +1

Yeah it's not up-gradable too which is a real shame, it'd be fine for most things now but long term….

    • yep 2x 8gb in duel channel is the minimum anything laptop or desktop should have these days

  • Whats the best way to clone the nvme drive to a bigger drive?
