I have both the 200 and the 400 string lights, although never got around to putting the 400 up yet (maybe next Christmas!)
Without a doubt the coolest lights I have ever owned.

I bought the 400 on a price match against Briscoes at Mitre 10 last month which I got for $160 with the intention of adding it to the Christmas setup.
Thought that was a good deal at the time but to be able to get the 400 for $136 on a price guarantee now is really sharp.

Note: There are two strings of lights in each pack connected together.
      So a 16m string is 2x8m and the 32m is 2x16m

      • Did you put the 200 on a Christmas tree? Good coverage overall? I don't really need this, so I'd rather go for the cheaper option. Or skip it altogether.

        • +2

Yes the 200 are on a Christmas tree (approx 6ft artificial tree).
It looks impressive but the 400 would definitely be better.

When you put more lights on you can do more detailed displays - even logos and animations but they get a bit lost without the exra lights for more detail.
If you just want light colours then 200 is fine.

You link them together too which I intend to try - that would turn my 200 lights into 600.

          • @bigcheese: I put the 400 on a 6ft tree and wanted the 600. I fear it's a slippery slope. Costco cleared out their sets of 600 for $200

        • Got the 400 on a 7ft tree ATM, any less, while ample, would not exploit the sheer potential of these lights - definitely would not recommend 200 on a 7ft.

          • +2

@cartwheelz263: The beauty of these lights is that you can link the different sets together.
Next Christmas I intend to have 600 on the tree (current 200 set plus the 400 set).

            • @bigcheese: Damn, that will be something!

Now I'm tempted to jump on this deal haha….

              *edit: bought…

            • @bigcheese: do you mean join as in daisy chain (with one power adapter) or joining the programming in the app

              • @Didntknowya: Joining in the app.
You still need a separate adapter for each light set but you can link multiple sets together in the app.
My intention is to effectively turn my 200 and 400 set into an equivalent 600 set by joining them this way.

      • Does this apply as well?

        • +1

Yes it should - forgot about that.
As per the comments in that post, expect they might try and deny both a price match and a voucher but it meets the rules so worth a go.

          From Mitre 10:

Can I use Mitre 10’s Price Guarantee when Mitre 10 is running a promotion – for example, a free store card promotion.

          Yes.

  • Would it be cheaper to buy from Ali express or something as Briscoes is quite overprice

    • I don't think Aliexpress does Twinkly Smart String lights.

      • Usually rgb lights are available on aliexpress. Just the shipping takes too long

        • Its not the same, check out these lights, they are far more sophisticated than whats available on Ali Express https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfRycX5AJNg

@Pandyplaz2: They are nowhere close to being the same. Twinkly lights are individually addressable meaning you can use them to create any patterns you want.

              • @Plug: Addressable LED's aren't expensive anyway. I've made my own LED Strip that is addressable. Not too difficult. Mechanical engineer.

                • +1

@saxasianguy: You're paying for Twinkly's software that powers it too. There isn't anything on the cheap end that matches what these lights do, so they can set their own market

                • +1

@saxasianguy: Yeah, but try making a whole ecosystem of addressable RGB LEDs with 3D mapping software to match. Sure, you could do it, but there are several technically difficult problems that Twinkly have solved in a really nice way.

Example: string up your Christmas tree however you want. Up, down, zig zag, who cares. Take a few short videos with the calibration setting in their app and now the app knows exactly where every light is in 3D space on your tree. Got some dangled over the mantlepiece, or another handful of sets across the wall? No problem, it will pick up and synchronise all of them. Then you can simply play preset patterns, animations, or even draw to create your own animations and it will correctly map the colours across all the strings like pixels on a monitor. Addressable LEDs enable this, but the software makes it "magic". That's what you're paying for.

  • Getting $89 delivered and not $85. Am I missing something?

  • +1

$85 is click and collect for me.

    $92
    -$10
    +$3
    —-$85 click and collect

    • +1

      Sorry - you are correct.
I had it set to click & collect rather than delivery.

$85 is the click & collect price with coupon, $89 delivered.

Do you have a video to show that they are "very similar"? Until then I'll go out on a whim and say the crap on Aliexpress is vastly inferior to the Twinkly product. Looking at the product review pictures on AE they look terrible.

      • -1

Most of the lights sold here is rebranded lights from china, the quality won’t be much better than the ones they rebranded

        • +4

Maybe some of the stuff sold at Bunnings or the like but you are trying to compare them to the Twinkly product and there isnt a comparison.

Its like a deal coming up on a Lamborghini and you coming in posting a link to a 2007 Toyota Aqua on TradeMe. Has aircon and electric windows just like the Lambo but at a fraction of the cost.

          • @moona: Yeah but how effective will the Lambo be for ram raids. Seems like it would be too low

    • +2

They’re not even remotely comparable. Stop spreading bs.

    • +1

These just a generic lights. You can't even control a single led from the strip, let alone controlling a zone. With twinkly, you can click photo and set the design you like. Show me a video or even a comment these basic aliexpress lights can do it like that. Even if you can provide an example of controlling a specific set of leds I will buy it.

  • Mitre10 has 50% off all Christmas lights which makes them cheaper than briscoes

    • And it comes up on the checkout as priced below cost too.

      • $150 at mitre10 (400, string), just tried scanning them and theyre coming up at $300 but staff saying obviously 50% iff applies so no dice on below cost here anyway (Upper Hutt). What price did you get

        • +1

I ended up going for the 400 dots (also from Upper Hutt) for 50% off at $159.50.

          • @jesserockz: Sounds like you got the series 2 (rgb + white) maybe. But good to know, I ended up buying them too but too late to price match or the $15 voucher. So $175. 400 isnt as dense as I hoped, but I think theyll last a long time and work excellently

    • Just put some Twinkly products through and didnt see any discount in checkout?

    • +1

is that in store only? I get full price when added to cart on M10 website.

      • Sorry, yes this was in-store only

  • I've been wanting these for a while, thanks!

    • +1

I don’t regret buying them at all.
It is so cool to be able to control the individual LEDs and make your own patterns & effects.
You can even download effects from the Twinkly store for free.
The colours are vibrant (and dimmable too) - not washed out like some of the cheap sets.

      • +1

One of our basic sets started dying this Christmas - that was the final excuse I needed to upgrade

  • The 400 set is $200 now :( guess I missed out

  • Got the 400 set yesterday from Mitre 10 after they had them for $150 and also got a $15 voucher. They are pretty impressive.

    • That's a good price for the 400 set plus a $15 voucher.
There are some cool effects you can download from the Twinkly store too - one of my favourites is 'Lightning'. It's really simple and only in the single colour (white) but pretty neat to see across the tree.

I like "firework". I drilled some holes in a star topper and poked lights into it, so it looked like the explosion was coming out of it

        • That sounds really cool.
          Yes I like Firework also.

  • Anyone that managed to order a 400 set have them dispatched? 200's are on the way, 400 is on back order. I'm half expecting the 400 will be cancelled at some stage.

  • A belated thanks for this. Loving the new lights. Got a 200 string then went back for another and now it's WOW. Best Christmas lights ever

    • No problem.
I think they’re pretty awesome too!
