Auckland to Los Angeles on United Airlines Return (Via Sydney/Melbourne) $621 Oct., $751 Feb

80

United Airlines is offering return flights to Los Angeles in February for ~$621 in October<->November and February<->March for $751 Expired. They are also offering flights in March for $917. This is an amazing price for a flight to LA as the next best price for a flight to LA is around $1700.

The caveat is that you have to fly Jetstar or LAN from Auckland to Melbourne/Sydney, then fly to LA. Considering how much money you save I reckon it's worth it. Play around with the dates. The key seems to be leaving in Feb but you can return in March, April etc.

Google Flights is good for searching.

The $621 fare is via Skyscanner. Screenshot October 20<->Nov 2

March Flights

ITA Matrix is also a good site but you can't book from there.

Update:

The $751 fares are no longer available and are replaced with $917 fares.

There is a new United website and an old United website. They appear to have different prices.

To get to the old website (clear cookies first or go incognito):

It currently shows $917 return flights in Feb/March

To get to the new site:

  • Just go to United.com

Currently shows airfares from $1100

Perhaps these fares are due to some change between the 2 sites.

As for the Skyscanner price, it appears to be pointing to Travelgenio which has some not so great reviews. Travel2be has similar issues.

However, ITA is still pulling a $787 flights in Feb via LAN through Sydney. Screenshot

United's website can't put in the LAN flight. A travel agent may be able to get you the flight but not sure.

Update 2:

You can now book the $650 flights on Ebooker which is owned by Orbitz (big company).

  • Last night the LAN fares weren't available. It generates an error when you try and book them and make payment.
It seems the jetstar fares however are available and are only slightly more.

Also you can pick them up cheaper if you book in AUD or USD - the NZ site seems to be charging 25% more - eg $750NZD equiv vs $950NZD sort of thing. It does seem difficult to book in other currencies though, billing address perhaps.

    • Is that through United directly, or another booking site?

      • United directly. None of the cheap flights are direct flights from AKL though as the title mentions. They all seem to transit through SYD, using various other carriers.

        • Oh ok, maybe Neil and I never saw that as neither of us are there, got a VPN you could test from a different location using?

I was meaning directly as opposed to through a 3rd party, such as Expedia or Webjet etc.

        • @Shaw: Yeah direct on united.com, from a NZ ip. The problem is you can't purchase in AUD or USD without a valid billing address in that country. Unsure what it shows as from different IP addresses overseas.

        • @eXDee:

Yea, but what if you select NZD from outside NZ via a VPN, with NZ billing details? Does that drag the price down compared to booking from within NZ?

        • @Shaw: Good question. I don't have one immediately available to me unfortunately. I hate how airlines and other services mess with pricing based on different markets :(

        • @eXDee:

Ahh, ok, I'm trying to search on there now from here, but it keeps timing out, I'll try another browser.

Yea, it's a pain, but there are always ways around it, just sometimes it requires a bit more work.

        • OK, there seems to be some odd behavior.

Firstly, the $751 fares are no longer available.

United's website can't put in the LAN flight. A travel agent probably can but I'll see if I can find a website that may do so.

  • According to fare rules: TICKETS MUST BE ISSUED ON/BEFORE 23OCT 15.

    • Cheers, made that the expiry date.

You can now get the $650 (£289.90) flights through Ebooker which is a company owned by Orbitz (big travel company).
