Dunno about 'better' but Arlo and Eufy are fairly popular.
Eufy is the only one left. Arlo used to have free 7 day cloud storage on their older models but now that it's coming to an end as well. You can still get notifications on the ring and arlo but you cannot record or store them without a subscription. There are also a lot of smart features that need paid subscription as well.
Wait, when is it coming to an end for Arlo Pro 2 free 7 days storage? Haven't seen this news…

Starting January 1, 2023, Arlo is implementing an EOL policy for its products and services, with the Generation 3 (VMC3030) and Pro (VMC4030) cameras being affected on April 1, 2023. These cameras were released in 2014 and 2016, respectively. The EOL of the Generation 3 (VMC3030) and Pro (VMC4030) cameras means that certain features of, and support for, these cameras will become unavailable, including 7-day cloud storage, firmware updates, and email notifications. To find your product model number go to the Arlo Secure App > Settings > Support Center > click on your specific camera and then scroll down to the details section to view the product model number.
These cameras may continue to be operated after April 1, 2023 by all existing Arlo owners to live stream video, receive motion notifications, and store video clips locally with a compatible Arlo base station. These cameras also can utilize Arlo’s new cloud storage, which is available with the Arlo Secure subscription service, though the EOL’d cameras themselves may lose some functionality over time, as they will not be provided with further firmware upgrades.

I think eufy had a big scandal recently, where it was discovered they were uploading stuff to the cloud even though they had said it was all local. Also lead to vulnerabilities where basically anyone could tap into their cameras and spy on people.

@cheddarcheesesticks: I think you will find most platforms have had that problem. The moral of the story is keeping your camera in a safe place otherwise you might end up on certain.com sites as a movie star.

I have one of these but no longer pay for subscription so it is just used as a flood light. Recording was so hit and miss. I had one case where it sent me an alert so I went to the app. Seen someone on my property on the live video but the video was never saved.

I have two Ring spotlight cameras and I hate them. The subscriptions are a big money grab and there isn't any other option as there is no internal storage or onboard memory slot. If you plan on purchasing just one, I guess you won't mind. It adds up when you buy multiple cameras and have a ring doorbell. They should implement an address or family subscription.
They have 2 plans, a $5-ish plan for one camera and a $15-ish plan for unlimited cameras at one address. Sure onboard storage or local network storage would be nice, but imho not really necessary here.
If you want a cheap security camera with no subscription and local sd card there are much cheaper options, if you want a multi-camera networked system with local network storage then a wired solution would be better.
Ring suit the mid-price minimal setup approach, particularly if you need to grant guest access to a subset of cameras.
That said, a 4k camera offering would be nice, 2k isn't really sufficient these days
