Wellington to Tokyo, Japan from $708 Return on Fiji Airways [Oct to Dec] @ Beat That Flight

110

While not as cheap as Christchurch and Auckland are now - in the $600s!, I hadn't seen good prices for Wellington, but that has now changed with prices in the 700s, RETURN to Tokyo. Some examples below.

Fiji Airways is a 4-star airline and you have one stop in Nadi, Fiji enroute.

  • can you turn it into a 5 night stop over or something like that in tokyo?

    • Do you mean Tokyo? or Nadi? If Nadi best I've seen is 23 hour 50, so you could at least get a night in a resort or something

      • I did some digging can actually do a good deal.

        Wgtn - Nadi direct
        4 night stop
        Nadi - Tokyo direct
        11 nights
        Tokyo - Nadi direct
        6 nights
        Nadi - Wgtn direct

$4600 incl taxes for 2 adults and 2 children (>2yrs). All with fiji airways.

$1344 for just 1x adult. And no horrible flights.

That does sound like a great trip!

        • Awesome if you can break the trip like that.

Most main airline company online booking sites fail to do that very well and don’t really give the option to extend stopovers.

        • What dates are these for? Sounds like a great family holiday!

  • Why is it more expensive to book the same flight via Fiji Airway website/app? I thought it would be cheaper to book directly from the airline than via an agent.

The OTAs often lower the price of just the ticket, and make their money back (on average) with extras:
      - insurance
      - pay to receive text updates
      - rental car deals
      etc

Some also have some 'dark patterns' like pre-selecting some of these optional extras.

However, they are indeed optional, and as long as you keep an eye on the price as you go through the booking, you can score a bargain.

    Good deal, OP.
For those who wouldn't mind spending a bit more, I came across business class on Fiji Airways for ~$1.7k o/w and ~$3k r/t a month or two ago, which is equal or less than what other 'established' airlines charge for PE. I am not sure if it is still available, but I managed to book an o/w that will work with one of my upcoming trips.
Note that the flight between Nadi and Tokyo will be in their A330, which has their older generation of business class (from what I can see, the bed will not be fully flat and in a 2-2-2 configuration), so best to expect the flight as a PE+ with lounge access than a typical business class experience that you would typically get on the likes of Air NZ, Singapore Airlines, etc.

I also just came back from a week in Tokyo, and would definitely recommend Japan as a top holiday destination before it gets back to its pre-covid tourism level.
It is also worth noting that visitors can shop tax-free, which takes 8%-10% off most non-perishable items (only for purchases >5,500 Yen; assuming you sign up for the tax-free program when you fill in your arrival information and brings your passport with you everywhere). One notably cheaper item is PS5, with the disc version being widely available at 60,940 Yen (54,940 Yen with tax-free; which is ~NZ$660). The digital-only version is even cheaper at around $50k Yen, but I did not see any in stock out of the 20+ tech stores I visited.
I bought the PS5 disc version and carried it back in a backpack without any issue. The PS5 is working well so far (need an adaptor for NZ plug), fully compatible with games I bought here, and can be changed to English during installation.

Klook also has an online Bic Camera coupon for those visiting Japan before the end of this year, which takes another 3-7% off for certain items on top of the 10% tax-free. https://www.klook.com/activity/73336-bic-camera-tourist-priv…

The only hiccup I had in Japan is not being aware that I needed to complete a whole bunch of arrival and COVID vaccination information online prior to arrival, which ended up costing me an extra hour to get out of the airport.

    • Thanks for the advice, will be useful when we go in Sept.

    • Indeed, I gave an example of it in the other post from $2877 return.
