    Shipped. Woohoo.

    • Mines still pending (nothing on my credit card yet)

16TB and the "Little Skill Seekers: 1-2-3 Draw! Workbook"
Considering I happened to be awake when the deal was posted and so ordered at 3am, I'm guessing that book must be the delay - wonder if other orders still waiting also got that book

      • Mine has been charged, but not shipped - I only ordered two 12TB drives, nothing else.

However, I have at least been charged, so further on.

        • I got an email to say my order was shipped :-)

      • I ordered around 2pm when few of the Pros were already out of stock. Wanted to go for 16TB as well, thought too long in morning and got busy later on to miss it. But looking at it, looks like the book might be the delay.

On flip side, orders are being fulfilled so my guess is it would happen soon. 16TB still showing stock so no issues there.

      • Did you get it finally?

        • +1

Yup, shipped notice came yesterday finally

    • Ditto, just got the alert. Happy days.

  • My 3x 18tb has been shipped.

  • Pretty salty I missed out on this one :(

  • My 16TB are on the way

  • My cc has been charged but now email of shipped yet.
I did order that book so that might have been the delay as mentioned above.

  • "Package departed an Amazon facility
    Aurora, CO US"
i was hoping it came from aus, i hope it was packaged safely.

    • Yup mine coming from us too

  • I just got my shipping confirmation, also coming from a US warehouse.

    • Mine is coming from the US too.

  • My 1x 20TB just shipped from US warehouse.

  • My 12TBs are on the way from the US

  • Mine is now dispatched also, shipped via DPD who ever that is, eta by 6th May

  • Ouch my 2 x orders were combined, and Aramex has sent me forms for orders over $1K NZD. Any idea what to do here?

    • +1

Fill the forms, It's a pretty standard process, there are past comments from others who've had to do the same.

      Aramex website:

Customs Declaration if the goods' value is above NZD 1,000 (equivalent to USD 800) or a customs duty refund is requested. Fee: NZD 17.94 (equivalent to USD 14) per shipment presented to customs authorities.

  • +1

Ooh I found a site that will give actual tracking details for DPD. It even shows me my local courier's tracking number for it!
    https://wndirect.com/tracking-dpd.php

    • ohhh noooo

how could they do this to us :(

      a r a m a x

    • +1

Wow, my package is already in NZ. Customs cleared. Amazon still showing estimated 6th May.

      • Mines arrived this morning already.

Can't say I'm impressed with the packaging. A cardboard box with an OK amount of folded cardboard protection inside.
        No foam, bubble wrap etc
        Heres what it looks like

I've taken photos of each stage of the unboxing, and will run it through some tests (I think both crystaldiskmark ones) just to be on the safe side

        • Ouch. Though it makes sense as amazon is moving to environment friendly packaging. that cardboard package does look strong, but not sure how much bumps it can minimize on the drive.

Good for reminding to take unboxing video. I will do the same just to be on the safe side.

        • Mines is arriving today as well via Aramex. Damn, this guys always delivers to my neighbors house. I have complained so many times and they still do it.

        • Mine arrived about 3 hours ago

  • Yay - my parcel is being delivered by Fastway….

    Bugger - That's now Aramex….

Says it should now arrive today, so that means sometime this year… maybe.

      • Now I'm concerned….

        • +1

Why nervous? The packaging is pretty good for me.

          https://imgur.com/a/ENN0npW

          • @CanSerMan: Well for harddisk with physical moving disk inside not sure how much protection a cardboard box can provide. It's more to do with how much shock disk can sustain before getting damaged.

            • @ace310: Yes - it would be nice if they had one of those 'shock' stickers.

              • +1

                @Alan6984: Here you go
                😲

                • @bigcheese: That's why I always say, you are such a great guy.

Don't know what I'd do without you :-)

          • @CanSerMan: Thats the same packaging I got, but for a device as precision made as a harddisk its not a very good way of packagine - every shock it receives before something is damaged, a head bumps a platter etc.

Take a USB external HDD as an example, the drive is side the plastic enclosure which has rubber feet suspending it inside which absorb some shock. Next the plastic case is boxed up inside the retail packaging which has a similar cardboard setup to what these drives arrived in.

Finally, that retail package is then shipped out in courier packaging (often just some loose packing material inside a box)

            A lot more protection.

Thankfully its passing all tests without issue or signs of damage

            • @Tmurder91: How long do those tests need to run for approximately?

              • @cutcutcut: I'm not much of an expert and it comes down to how much you want to test them as there was a lot of different information and opinions online.

It also depends on your setup, as if you are putting this drive into an existing array with redundancy then you might not care as much, as any drive failure won't lose data and so you might be OK with showing errors in a few months so you can just replace without data loss.

I personally wrote the full capacity of the drive one time and checked S.M.A.R.T data

    • Mine has been “in transit from Auckland to Wellington” for 28 hours now, so that’s fun.

    • +1

Wow, that's a cracker. You received the package yet?

  • Mine just arrived today. For me the packaging is okay.

Disclaimer: not from me but the packaging is the same

  • My 20TB showed up, although the problem i now have the enclosure i was going to use doesn't support a 20TB. Anyone have any recommendations?

    • +1

      lol get a NAS?

    • +1

Not sure if this helps, but I have a lot of 4TB Seagate external HDDs that I have shucked and put the disks into my NAS

I kept around 2x of the enclosures which have the SATA data/power board, power supply etc. They make really good adapters for when I need to quickly connect an internal disk over USB3.

I just tested with my 16TB Ironwolf Pro and a Western Digital Red 3TB and both showed up

    • Well, after trying multiple enclosures & plugging it directly into the motherboard of a windows dekstop it still isn't working :(
it just beeps every few seconds. Amazon have advised they can not issue a replacement & its a refund only.
So um, anyone have a spare 20TB they're willing to part with ..

      • +1

You could try contacting SeaGate directly, and ask if they will do a replacement - I know people that have done that before.

No idea on this on though, as they may say they will only do it within the US (say), or perhaps they might charge freight - worth asking at least?

  • +1

just got my 20TB in a paper bag with the book with a big hole on the side of the bag.
the box with the drive in looks to be ok, now to stick it in UNRAID and preclear it and see if i get any errors

    • same here, now the hardest part, 20 hours to check all blocks for errors.

      • It'll take longer than 20hrs, I'm guessing a few days. I have four I will need to check when they arrive through customs.

I'm thinking of building a new unraid server, currently just using Ubuntu with mergerfs and docker on an old i7-3770.

        • 25hours and 24 mins.
im still using my old sandy bridge server for freenas

          • @coffeee: 25 hrs per step, and I did 2 cycles.
Mine finished yesterday and is now building the parity, 1 day left to complete.

  • Well, this is horrific. My parcel was "delivered" by Aramex just now, and the bag was RIPPED OPEN and only had one of my ordered hard disks in it. Do I (1) bother complaining to Aramex, (2) bother complaining to Amazon, or (3) just issue a chargeback with my card provider? I'm so pissed, because I would bet the entire value of the purchase on the driver stealing it.

Edit: Amazon were very quick to respond, have raised a support ticket, and taken the photos I took of the package as it was delivered. Might be some hope after all…

    • Yup, definitely 2 without a doubt. They've been really good resolving any issues I've had in the past.

    • was it a van or a passenger vehicle being on a sunday?
they use https://blucouriers.co.nz/ ,a while back a family in the vehicle delivered my parcel which was concerning.
      soo many bad reviews online

      • Don't know, I didn't see it actually be delivered; they left it shoved into my letterbox! I got to it within about 10 minutes of the delivery notification, so I doubt someone stole half my package from the letterbox and left half behind.

    • oh that sucks! sorry to hear that. I hope you get a refund or another HDD delivered. Strange situation only stealing half of the package.

    • Mine got "delayed",still in tarnsit from Auckland to Christchurch!

      6 business days and counting…Aramex fosho! :D

      • Update: Mine arrived today.

Intial smart analysis of 3x20TB is all good and drives were manufactured in the last week of Jan 2023.

    • Wow, good result! I just got an email from the warehouse manager that they have found my missing drive and have it on the next courier run to me. Probably helps that I sent them a picture of the one I received and said “look for exactly this sitting on the floor.”

    • ARAMEX are terrible, there's facebook groups about the complaints for them

after using them 2-3 times and having issues each time with no apology or expediting the shipping. i juts stopped using them and won't touch them with a 20ft pole.

  • My 2 x 12TB arrived this morning. Packaging the same as the rest of you except I had those air filled bags in the large box. I'm fine with it. See what the tests show. Amazing deal.

Not good news for one Geekzone member.

    https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=164&topicid=30…

Two of my new drives are non-functional out of the box. There was no sign of damage in transit.

Placed all four drives in a new Synology NAS and only two came online. Testing on a PC, one drive spins up and has a faint click (stops after a while - I assume the drive just gives up trying), and the other has a very faint pulse, suggesting it's not spinning up.

Looks like I can do the RMA with Seagate directly, but it wants me to ship the drive to Hong Kong.

  • +1

My two 12TB drives arrived today.

They seemed to be reasonably packed in terms of boxes / cardboard, but with no air-bags / foam / scrunched-paper or anything similar to absorb shocks.

We'll see how they go upon testing.

  • Sorry to hear people are having issues with these drives, please keep us informed of the rectification process.

So, should we be un-packaging all the drives we've received & checking them.. generally we like to keep things that have arrived and appear to have been undamaged in shipping to remain sealed in their OEM packaging.

Out of maybe 30 HDD's we've bought from AMAZON, only 1 had issues, it had issues (a few dozen bad sectors upon arrival 2019) and it slowly got worse finally crashing the array earlier this year while showing 96 bad sectors - now wish we'd RMA'd it upon arrival back in 2019.

    • +2

Your call of course, but I tend to video the unboxing (in case there is obvious damage upon receipt - even loose pieces in the box), then immediately test the drives.

However, that does mean that if I changed my mind / wanted to on-sell them (it wasn't something that I could return to the retailer for credit / refund), they are now definitely in 'used' condition (maybe excellent 'used' condition, but not 'new'), which means you'll generally get about a third of retail if you re-sell on, say, TradeMe, whereas new, sealed in original packaging, you can sometimes get two-thirds of retail.

My experience over many (twenty-five or so) years experience, is that drives tend to fail almost immediately (hours, days, maybe weeks), or they tend to last many years. Pretty much all drives fail eventually, despite the people that will triumphantly tell you that is not correct as they have a drive that's been running continuously since 1843 and their great-great grandmother used to work in a magnet factory or some similar tale.

      • lol - was writing same time as you Alan - yep, fully, your post is a roger, 100%

    • Well - curiosity and all… decided to check an 8TB disc, these (ours are 8's and 12's) all arrived in the convoluted cardboard single disc boxes, all apparently undamaged, all sealed with SEAGATE stickers etc etc.. packaging appears up to the task etc

So, have opened one, popped it in the last non-populated bay in a Synology 8 Bay NAS, adding to array etc… it is making the weirdest noises… ziiirrr zip clunk zap grrrrr

      Diskstation says 'Status Normal'

      • If I get a drive that makes unexpected noises when installed in a server / array, I pull it immediately, and call the supplier.

Not sure how that will go with Amazon, but I would at least give it a go with them (might need to be online contact).

        • Yep - have pulled it… will pop it in a ORICO HD Dock in a bit, see what it acts like there… bit weird isn't it, wonder how many discs were bought, I mean, if we (GZ + Cheapies) bought thousands then a few (a few dozen?) with issues isn't too bad perhaps… and we're hearing about those with issues more likely than those w/out etc

          Disc #1
          Synology Bay 8/8
          Seagate IronWolf 8TB
          Model: ST8000VN004-2M2101
          Serial: WSD9PVZ1
          FW Version: SC60

          IronWolf Disc 1

      • Did you go for an Iron Wolf Pro? They are loud drives

        • No, the 8's we got are standard IronWolfs and they've all now this morning passed extended testing, so probably 'ok'

They certainly made a lot of weird noise to begin w/in the server, but now back in the server a lot more 'quiet'

  • +1

My two 12TB drives also arrived today. First one installed in the NAS syncing as we speak. Initial health check appears normal.

Both we're well packaged in individual cardboard boxes (appear OEM) as shown in previous comments. Boxes were then fit snugly in a larger box. I'm happy with the packaging, there's no sign of impact damage.

  • +1

My 6x 8tb drives have been running in a raidz2 array since Friday. No issues to report

  • +1

My 4 x 20TB Pro Drives arrived - Packed well, individual boxes within a larger box.

They are very loud drives, after listening to videos online of similar drive noise (heads/searching, etc), it seems to be standard.

I have run an extended test on all four drives, all passed with flying colours.
Now sitting in a NAS with SHR, all fine and operational, definitely louder than my other NAS with 4 x 4TB Drives.

    • +1

I could only hear the stock AMD fan noise when hammering the 20TB ones.

They are somewhat (compared to shucked WD drive) loud when spinning up!

  • +1

4x12TB arrived today. One of them is DOA (NAS reports error when even trying to pull SMART info, not even recognized when connected via USB to Windows, makes weird noises when spinning up)

I will try to RMA to Seagate because Amazon will only refund me, not send a replacement

  • GOT SCAMMED by this… FYI i purchased the 12TB IronWolf and just received my "package" today which contained some shitty Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cables…
Would be very interested if anyone else had the same experience.

    • +1

Doesn't sound like as scam, as much as a stuff-up in a logistics/courier warehouse?

Get in touch with Amazon ASAP and let them know as they should be able to sort really quickly

      • +1

UPDATE: 20min later another package arrived, with the HDD looking in brand new packaging and everything.
So definitely very strange that i got an extra package, but yes must just be a dispatch issue. Will get a hold of them..

        • Sometimes Amazon sends in multiple packages

          • @notmyusername: Sure.. but I never ordered the cables at all, so that's what threw up my alarm bells originally. Especially hearing so many stories of dodgy vendors on Amazon doing that exact thing, sending fakes / incorrect products.

  • Anyone have a 16TB spare they want to sell cost+ship to wellington

  • I got an email this morning saying that they have received my return and have issued a refund. I never even got the drive (estimated delivery was 6/05) and definitely didn’t return it. Anyone had something like that before?
Only thing I can think of is it got automatically returned to sender at some point (customs?). Was just 1x 8TB for me

    • Just has a chat to support and apparently it was lost in transit (specifically the pickup stage from the warehouse). A bit of a shame as I had my hopes up for this great deal…

  • +1
    • Seems to be blocked / deleted?

      What was it about?

      • Guessing you're not a member of OzBargain or haven't met the requirements if you are.

The person that runs it said this in a previous post:

I've found an HDD vendor in HK on eBay who is selling large capacity enterprise-level hard drives at a pretty good price (cheaper than Amazon) and provide a reasonable level of post-sale support.
If we have enough interest and we can order in bulk, the seller can supply the HDDs at a better price compared to their eBay listings.
Please be mindful that all the HDDs are OEM stock, so you will not get a warranty direct from manufacturers (Seagate, or WD), the warranty will need to claim with the seller, and the seller will arrange the return label for the warranty.

        • Thanks for copying here.

Apologies - I had been logged out of OzB, but I hadn't realised. Once I logged in again, the link worked (works).

  • Bought 4x 20TB

    1 - seems to work

2 - computer wont boot to bios when plugged in

3 - slow boot to bios and HDD shaking a lot

4 - computer wont boot to bios when plugged in

Another strange thing is in bios #1 shows up as ST20000NE000 and HDD #3 shows up as ST20000NE000-3G5101
