  • no price in title ?

    • ahh knew i forgot something 😅

  • Discussion link is incorrect, it takes you to the search for the monitor itself.

Anyway, I have this monitor and it's pretty decent. I don't use it for gaming, mainly use it for work. I also use CRU to create custom resolutions that aren't supported natively by this monitor and it works really well. Currently using 2736 x 1077 and in my AMD Adrenaline, I have the scaling mode set to Full Panel and I'm using software scaling, not GPU scaling. Everything looks really sharp and text isn't blurry. I'm using 100% scaling for all my resolutions.

You can of course set to a high resolution at a higher scaling at e.g. 125%, but I hate doing this because certain apps that don't support high DPI will break. Even if you set the compatibility on those apps, it's sometimes still a bit off and you'd have to do this for multiple apps, which is annoying. Certain apps like Task Scheduler will have issues with the top right side corner (where the close button is), where your mouse will go slightly out of bound (over-scan issue, commonly reported on Github and other forums). 100% scaling and adjusting the resolution is always the best approach in my opinion.

    • I changed it to that because there have been many discussions on this monitor.

I've changed it back to the most recent thread.

    • Have you used it for Movies? how do they look?

I need something for work 80% of the time, and watch movies, shows sometimes, so just confused what to get. Currently have a Philips 27", but planning on upgrading to a bigger screen to have side-by-side windows with decent real estate to work with.

      • It's my main for about 3yrs now, and don't have issues with it. As long as you can accept it's a Va panel and will have some Black banding on really dark scenes in movies and games like Batman ones.

PBTech usually has one on display, maybe call your nearest and check it out

        • Good call on pbtech. Will have a look at it. Thanks.

          • @ace310: As long as your work is not Videography/photography related where colour accuracy is important in which case IPS is a must have, The Va colours on this a pretty good

Dell S3422DWG is same but slightly better if you can find it at the same price

            • @Huntakillaz: I am in development, so not too concern about color. I am more tempted on the other 2nd hand 32 Philips.

For movies it's good enough for me, but then again I'm not picky when it comes to monitor screens in general. As for side-by-side windows, I'd still recommend going for a dual monitor setup. The screen size isn't that great for side by side stuff, as putting 2 word documents or browser windows or VS Code windows side by side doesn't actually look that good. There's a demo one on display at PBTech Penrose, go check it out and you'll see what I mean. If you really want full productivity for office use, it's best to use dual monitors at 27' or larger.

Also, regardless if you go for a dual monitor setup or not, I recommend the following apps for maximum office productivity:

        • PowerToys - make use of Fancy Zones

        • DisplayFusion - create monitor profiles and have virtual splits, as well as many other really useful features. I have this automation that kicks in depending on whether I'm working from home or working in the office. It loads the correct screen resolution for all the monitors, automatically arranges them in the right position and automatically loads virtual splits for me. Virtual split essentially turns your physical monitor into 2 or 3 or X number of virtual monitors. I have specific apps that always need to be moved to a specific monitor and maximize it, so this app does that for me too. It offers wallpaper features and plenty of other functionalities and you can create your own functions as well.

        • CRU - creates custom resolutions and per refresh rate as well.

        • Gotcha thanks, that's what I wanted to know. I will check out albany tom. If VS windows doesn't look that good side by side then no point for me.

Only reason going for bigger screen is the added benefit of watching movies on bigger screen, but not at the compromise of productivity.

Dual screen is not an option right now, As will have to invest in a dock as well. Current dock only supports 1 monitor, so I will stick with it for now.

          • @ace310: To be fair, the screen is quite nice and it's great if you want to use it for e.g. Google Maps to get a better overview of what you're looking at. And in VS Code, if you just have one window open and maximized to the entire screen, it works great. But anything that requires a split screen down the middle is kinda meh, but that's not a fault with the monitor itself, it's just that you'd need a much bigger screen to make split screen worth while.

Keep in mind that the resolution that you're using, the scaling and the layout customizations in your VS Code will be different to mine. I've got really good eye sight and so I don't use scaling above 100% and my resolution is generally quite high and still good on the eyes. For my VS Code setup, I have about 200+ extensions and a sidebar on the right for ChatGPT (integrated into VS Code) and so the stuff I'm working on requires a lot of screen real estate, so trying to do everything on a single screen isn't going to be enough.

I recommend just getting a dual screen setup if you really want true productivity. You can find cheap 27' screens on Trademe under like $300 easy. I got one of my screens for like $100 and it's an Asus 27' gaming monitor, albeit a couple of years old. I have a total of 6 monitors at home and most of them I got it for cheap.

As for dock, I've used a lot of them and can provide recommendations here too if you want. I just have a single USB-C cable with power delivery coming from my dock to my laptop. My monitors are connected to my dock and my charger powers both the dock and my laptop. Anytime I need to take my laptop to the office, I just unplug one cable and that's it. Super simple.

If your laptop eats a lot of power (like mine does), then I suggest getting a dock that supports 135W or 175W charging. The Lenovo 175W dock should do the job, it supports dual display port and dual HDMI port, as well as many other ports for USB-A and USB-Cs and ethernet. It's a really good dock. Be sure to double check the model of the dock though. There's currently a Lenovo "170W" selling on Trademe and it's false advertising, so watch out for that. I bought my dock brand new from PBTech for about $290 - https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBDLEN74135/Lenovo-THINKPAD…

You can prob find them cheaper on Trademe though. Worth the investment. There are also some really good docks (surprisingly) from Aliexpress but unfortunately they don't sell them anymore.

Oh and in terms of power usage from the Xiaomi monitor, I think it's about 80W, which is roughly the equivalent of 2 monitors.

            • @NovaAlpha: Thanks for the details. Just bought Philips 328P6V 32" 4K LCD. Can't complain for $215. I have a Philips 273v currently with my laptop.

Will have to find out if that dock works with my work Dell laptop. Some of the Dells are bit picky somethings with the dock. Plus, IT has some security rules on what type of docks I can use due to privacy policies and stuff. Currently have a ugreen 7in-1 dock with pd which has 1 hdmi 4k@60hz so works fine. Wife needs a monitor so thought I will upgrade myself and give her 27".

Edit: Wow didn't knew Chatgpt has a plugin with Code. I don't use VS Code that much as have VS Enterprise license from work.

@ace310: It should work fine. I have like 5 different docks at home and like 10 different laptops (don't ask why) and most of the docks work with most of my laptops. The Lenovo one works with all of them, ranging from HP, Dell, Asus, Acer, Lenovo, MSI and a Surface Pro laptop.

But yes, HP and Dell are known to complain about the specific chargers they use, but generally as long as the wattage requirement is met, it should be fine. I did have to update the firmware on my Lenovo though, but yeah it works great and doesn't run hot at all.

Oh and avoid using HP docks, they suck and are overpriced.
