Got an email this morning. TBH this looks like a cheap reel but should be good for some light sabiki fishing for the kids.

  • Keen to get into easy fishing with kids. Not on boat. (Seasick). What’s the recommendation for somewhere close to Hamilton and gear recommendation please?

Raglan wharf would be the closest for saltwater. Waikato River would be ideal but you will need to buy licenses for freshwater.

      For gear:

      • rod reel combo: get a kid-targeted combo as these are usually easy to set up and gentle on the wallet. 3-6 feet depending on your kids' heights and dexterity.
      • rig: start with a sabiki rig and cut it down to 2-3 hooks to avoid tangles. get a few sinkers as well - 1-3g slower current lower weight used.
      • bait: cheap shrimp. everything eats shrimp and these stink less than fish bait. a little goes a long way with sabikis and tiny bait bits
      • equipment: chilly bin, scissors for snipping shrimp, rag

Here's a tutorial by Basic Fishing.

If you're new to fishing I'd recommend trying it out first on your own so you'll know what to do. Fishing with young kids is rarely "fishing" for the parent - it's just setting up, rebaiting, fixing tangles, etc. haha.

      Good luck!
