Thomson Barista Espresso Machine with Coffee Grinder $244.98 plus Shipping (Was $449) at The Warehouse

This machine was originally sold on The Market, but is now on clearance on The Warehouse website.

Obviously modelled off the Breville BES870 or the Sunbeam machine. If you're lacking a coffee machine in your life this might just fill the space.

        ahhh one of those

  • Does anyone know if these are any good? Any reviews? Thanks

  • This is the old link to the machine which has more details

    https://www.thewarehouse.co.nz/p/thomson-barista-espresso-ma…

  • Are these any good?

  • Worth a risk at half the price of the breville and sunbeam alternative.

Cant find any information or other shops selling this model

    • Disagree.

If you're buying a coffee machine buy a tried and try model. The good brevilles should last 10,000 coffees. For an $800 machine that is 8cents cup.
We actually get good pricing for brevilles here compared to what they sell in america - x2-2.5 more.

I wouldnt trust this to last 2,000 (so 12cents a cup). And you have no idea about the quality before buying.

Also doesnt make sense to buy it and store it for occasional use as that means stale beans, gunk solidifying in the grinder and who knows what bacteria in its water storage container. Only really makes sense if you want a machine for somewhere like a bach.

Dont understand throwing money and compromising on an everyday appliance. Pay once, cry once especially if it is replacing cafe priced coffee.

You can find some reviews on beems website as it is also branded under that

  • It looks good, but does it taste good?

I'm going to buy it and write a blog post, seeing as it has been like 3 years since the last post. Wish me luck.

      • See if you can try it with a higher end grinder too. It'll give you a better idea of whether it's limited by its built in one. Generally speaking quality priority order is

        1. Beans - dark roasted to heck is gonna have a burnt background flavour. A medium roast bean why which looks more matte than it does oily is a better test.

        2. Grinder - grind consistency matters. Try asking for a local roastery to grind up some fresh beans on on their mahlkonig or similar. And benchmark against the built in grinder

        3. Espresso machine - even if this is amazing/expensive if the other two are bad it's not going to be very good.

I buy green beans and roast them. Currently using a Breville Smart Grinder and a Delonghi EC850 (but on manual milk mode because those automatic frothers suck).

Link the post if/when you write one up 👍

  • I grabbed one too. I’ve been meaning to get one for years. Fingers crossed.

  • For $7, this will be useful to just have hanging around.

    • Unfortunately, no click and collect. Fine if you've got free shipping I guess.

I bought them with a coffee machine.

  • Purchased a fully automated Jura Z10 last week. Makes great cuppa but damn be prepared for an endless supply of milk & beans. My 1st coffee machine & it's lovely to wake up to the "cafe' coffee" aroma each morning.

  • Nice work @jackvdbuk. 4.1 out 5 over 184 reviews. Glad I purchased now.

  • Didn't grab one… Wish I had have now haha

Has arrived, it's similar but not the one in the picture (and thus not exactly the Beem one).

    Initial thoughts.

The grinder is the worst ever. I will see if I can adjust it. But on the finest setting you may as well have ground it with two hammer blows max.

Makes a foul brown water using the grinder. Large gap between the burrs and blades.

Fished my grinder out and used that and the coffee is delicious. So with a proper grind, it's very good.

It has a large cafe group handle which is good, could probably be a bit heavier.

The stainless tamp that comes with it is the best I've held. Weighs a tonne.

The steam wand is a little slow, but makes good milk.

If I can fix the grinder, it will be an excellent machine. If I can't fix the grinder, it defeats the purpose of the machine (to replace my machine and grinder) and I'll have to return it.

Will write a blog post with pictures on the weekend.

    • Thank you for the update, mines arrived (thanks OP) and look forward to the review!

Review is up, sadly I couldn't resolve the grinder and will have to return it. It looks to be a manufacturing problem where they set it incorrectly.

The large video is performing poorly (if at all), just putting them on YouTube at the moment and will attach them later.

Edit: Fixed, now pulling from YouTube for the videos.
