    Bring back the 50% off.
we are getting shafted on data otherwise.

    • +1

      Hopefully stil coming.
Usally either BOGOF or 50% off happens in August and November but who knows this year.

      • -3

was no deal late last year other than 30% off so I think those days are over. my option to renew the 12/mo term at 50% off has gone away too

  • Doesn't anyone know if Kogan SIMS bought to use in NZ will still work when travelling to Aus?

    • +1

nope, Kogan is a reseller of OneNZ. If you put the sim in your phone, it'll say OneNZ not Kogan.

      • +2

If Kogan is a reseller of OneNZ meaning we're using the One network but at Kogan prices? so One customers are paying a premium for the brand while getting the same service?

        • +2

          Not quite.
Yes they use the same network but just like Skinny uses the Spark network there are different offerings from each.
For example, you can't send premium texts with Kogan but you can with One.
Also there is more flexibility for One customers in terms of mixing up how many txt, minutes, data they want with the MyFlex Pre-Pay. With Kogan it's fixed and if you want to buy extra it costs a lot.

Kogan is great for price but it depends on what you what you are primarily after - budget offering v flexibility.

          • +1

@bigcheese: I also assume that Kogan customers get a lower qos, i.e. if there's limited bandwidth to a tower, the One customers would get faster speeds than the Kogan customers on the same tower. In practice I've never noticed such an issue.

          • +1

@bigcheese: The plans are obviously different but the underlying network is exactly the same. E.g One is going to be using starlink to get 100% coverage which would also fall to Kogan users.

What people are really paying for with OneNZ is the support, the physical stores and other perks that require alot of overhead but the network, the backbone etc is all the same.

Similar to how people have different internet providers or electricity yet it all comes from the same wiring, you're just paying extra for their overheads or better support.

Another example is trademe insurance which is tower insurance but alot cheaper. Trademe claims are handled online while tower, you speak to a person etc. Support is what you are paying for in the end.

            • @blazekid43: the support is a big one. if something goes wrong with Kogan, it's not near as easy to get help. like if you lost your phone/sim and trying to recover your phone number for example.

        • Kogan, no call centres, no retail stores, no internet offerings. All of these things reduce the operational budget, majority of their cost will be in the co-shareing of the mobile network.

      • Was wondering the same thing (since I've got a Sim from the last 50% off I mostly got in case someone else needed it).

Does make you question why they are sent from Australia then though.

        • Sims are sent from Auckland now.

    • +2

They won't work on the oz Kogan network. But you can pay for roaming like in most countries.

    • Just buy a Lebara in Aus, it comes with international minutes and texts

      https://www.lebara.com.au/prepaid-plans/30-day/

      • Can you use this in NZ?

    • Don’t bother buying a roaming pack. If your phone supports esims just sign up for a month of Kogan Mobile AU. Way cheaper than roaming.

    • Yep I was in Aus last week and they work - but you do have to get an international roaming pack which is nz$12 for 3 days https://www.koganmobile.co.nz/add-ons/international-roaming-…

If you just need mobile data, then this might be a better option:
    https://www.kogan.com/nz/buy/kogan-mobile-prepay-mobile-star…

I have a dual SIM phone and can just keep swapping in the Kogan SIM card to get 15GB every month at only $5. People can still text or call me at my main personal number. But in this day and age, mobile data is all you need for everything, including messaging and calling each other via WhatsApp or whatever other apps you use.

    • So essentially your number keeps changing with the new sim but that doesn't matter since you only use the data. Is that correct?

I would like to get something like that for my wife since she mostly uses data on her phone.

      • +1

        Yes, that's correct.

I'd recommend buying a couple of the $5 SIM cards about 1~2 months in advance, as it takes time for them to ship it to you. Then, just use a dual SIM phone. If you're an Android user, I recommend getting one of the mid-end Xiaomi/Redmi phones. They are bang for your buck in terms of hardware to price ratio. Some people might say that MIUI sucks, but that's because they don't know how to configure it. You can easily put MIUI EU (custom MIUI ROM with all the unnecessary bloatware apps etc stripped out), or you can tweak the official MIUI ROM yourself, or flash a custom ROM or whatever. But I digress.

One trick I recommend using is to sign up with a free account at https://www.bulc.club. Then, when you're buying the $5 Kogan SIM card, just use Bulc Club during the registration signup process. For example:

        [email protected]
        [email protected]
        [email protected]

All of those dynamic forwarder emails will go to your real email address. Your real email is completely protected and hidden. It's much better than the Gmail + alias trick, because if you were to use e.g. "[email protected]", then anyone can easily see that your real email is "[email protected]".

Once you activated the SIM, it will expire 30 days from the point it is activated. So if you have a stock of these SIM cards, they won't expire until you start using them.

You can then sign up with an account here:
        https://accounts.koganmobile.co.nz/

From there, you can use the same account to activate new SIM cards. It's also important to note that you need to cancel the auto-renew option. You can find this setting at the top right side:

        • Superb! Good info. Thanks!

        • So to confirm you have to use a new email address from bulc.club e.g. everytime to purchase new sims?

          • +1

@chrispy: The $5 deal only applies to new account signups, so you'll need a new email address (regardless whether you use Bulc.Club).

Bulc.Club just makes it easier to do the signup process. You generate the email address dynamically on the fly. You don't need to create a new Bulc.Club account every time.

Put it this way, let's say you use Gmail. If you need to purchase 3 SIM cards, then you'll need to signup for 3 Gmail accounts:

Each account requires you to fill in the name, birthdate, mobile number, country, etc. That's a lot of unnecessary steps just to get a Gmail account created.

Whereas with Bulc.Club, you sign up with an account just once. The account could be called "Blah". Then, just literally type the email address you want to use when you signup on websites, like this:

            [email protected]
            [email protected]
            [email protected]

Any email that goes to those dynamic addresses will automatically be forwarded to your real email address. Your real email address is hidden and protected, so nobody knows what it is.

        • So why are extra email addresses required? Can’t you just keep buying the starter pack on the same account and keep activating on your main Kogan mobile account on a new SIM?

          • @quebec: Literally already answered it in my first sentence. $5 only applies to new account signups.

            • @NovaAlpha: Sorry missed that. What about keeping your main Kogan no just for incoming calls & getting this starter pack every month for outgoing calls & data? Will the main one continue to receive calls if not renewed or is there a hack for it like adding some credit?

              • @quebec: You'd probably have to read the terms and conditions, but I believe that will work. It's a prepay number, so assuming you don't topup credits on your main number, it should last at least 12 months before they deem the number as inactive and deactivate it. It wouldn't make sense for them to deactivate it so quickly.

I'm using a dual SIM phone. One SIM is my personal number and the other is a work number with unlimited calls/texts/data. I don't really need to text or call people anymore from my personal SIM. These days, everyone just use mobile data to contact each other on Whatsapp, Slack, Teams, etc. So I basically just keep my personal SIM on prepay and top up credits every 11~12 months to keep it alive. If I need to call/text people or companies, I just do it using my work SIM and tell them to keep both my numbers in their contacts, just in case I change jobs and lose my work SIM and they can still reach me on my personal number.

Some time ago, I've checked with both Vodafone and 2Degrees whether my personal SIM will be deactivated if I don't top it up and they said it'll be deactivated if there's no activity on that SIM for 12 months. So as long as you make a text/call or top up, it should be fine.

Also, adding credits to your SIM is really only for allowing you to send calls/text OUT and also use mobile data. Receiving text or calls should be free and doesn't consume credits. MMS is different though, because it uses mobile data to download the images. So you should be able to use your personal number without any credits for months and people can still text and call you, while you reply them back using your other SIM.

Lastly, I've just logged into my Kogan account and this is what it says on the main account homepage:

"Your Phone Number will be reserved for 90 days past your Prepay Plan expiry.
Renew a Prepay Plan to keep your Phone Number."

I don't know whether this is true for all their prepay SIMs, or whether it only applies to the $5 starter pack deal that I got (https://www.kogan.com/nz/buy/kogan-mobile-prepay-mobile-star…). Again, you should read their terms and conditions and do your own research. I would recommend just transferring your number to 2Degrees or Skinny or whatever and then just spend like $10 or something to top up your SIM every once in a while. I'm using 2Degrees as my personal SIM and I can just top up a minimum of $10 like every 11 months.

  • If you place an order for the voucher it asks if you need a SIM. Can you get a SIM & still use the voucher with your existing connection or does the voucher come with the new SIM &!can only be used with that particular SIM?

    • Yes you can use the voucher on your existing connection so you may as well get a new SIM too.
Remember that if you are on a current plan with Kogan and then apply a new voucher it will overwrite it and you will lose whatever remaining time you had left on your old plan. It does not stack.
Always wait until the plan has expired (or is close to expiry) before applying the new code.

    • Sims and vouchers are not linked. It's a good idea to keep a few spare kogan sims it takes them forever to send you a replacement if one goes wrong

  • https://www.cheapies.nz/node/40457 is still an active deal and probably the best in New Zealand. $30 plus GST for 100GB with up to 99 connections to that plan. A farm source Credit Card as required. $2 for the first two months then pay just $30/month per person unlimited calls and texts.

    • Seems like a decent deal if you need data.

I have to pay for 3 people and none of us even use 1.5gb of data so this Kogan offer is great for me with only 3 days to go until my monthly renewal. Perfect timing.

      • Yes, I brought the same plan, but it was the yearly plan for $10 a month for my burner phone

  • $26 a month vs the $42 that I pay for less on the Vodafone …. This is a saving and a win.

Apparently the SIMs are shipped in country ex Auckland and arrive really quickly.

    • If you choose the $5 courier option yes it arrive quickly but otherwise it will be sent as standard post and not quick at all, that's my personal experience.

  • I am on a Kogan 12 month plan it was a good deal but it wont let me send texts to overseas phones, any one else had this problem . Thanks in advance.

    • That is correct.
Kogan offer unlimited calls and txts but only within NZ. You can buy additional add-ons to the plan but they are for international calling and data (not overseas txt) and are expensive.

Kogan is great for the price, although it has limitations. If you wish to send overseas txts then you are probably better with one of the other providers.

    • It's prepaid so any extra charges cannot be charged like overseas text. Skinny prepaid for instance doesn't let you send pictures over text but kogen does and 2° charge you $.50 on my monthly account. Kogan claims to support VoLTE, but my phone it doesn't work ,2 degrees on the same phone does.

    • +1

Depends on what country you mean by "overseas".

Kogan offer unlimited calls/texts to NZ and OZ, so if you're trying to text somewhere else then that's probably why it won't work.
