Transfer American Express Points to Qatar Airways Avios & Receive 20% Bonus @ American Express

30

American Express is celebrating their new partnership with Qatar Airways. Transfer Membership Rewards Points until 18 August and you get 20% bonus points. Normally the transfer ration is 3 to 1 which is slowly becoming the new standard within the Membership Rewards Programme (used to be 2 to 1 for most airline partners). However, 20% is a pretty good bonus and good if you are planning to book some flights anytime soon.

Example: Transfer 30000 points would usually get 10000 Qatar Airways Avios, with the bonus it’s 12000 Avios.

There does not seems to be a limit to the points than can be transferred. Amex notes that bonus points can take up to 45 days to appear in the account, but with similar promos in the past it was usually much faster.

  • Any thoughts on best ways to transfer amex points? Your expertise is appreciated!

  • A better (but substantially more hassle way) would be if you could open a US Amex CC. You can do 1 global transfer a year and points transfer at the current exchange rate. US Amex cards transfer at 1:1 to most airlines. Conviently you can also use your NZ Amex to get your credit qualified for a US Amex but you will still need to sort out a US address (that's not listed as a mail forwarder) and a US bank account to be able to pay off from. Most high end US cards have 0 FX fees so you could use it as a daily card here
